Hiya all, new tank enthusiast here. I just got in the first of three tanks today, unfortunately it's my Dad's Tiger that arrived so I can't "play" with it.

I have read that the Heng Long tanks come with true variable speed if they come with the S&S, but is this a standard or just usually true? And who is the best online store to deal with in Canada/North America? There is a "desert" here in Winnipeg when it comes to tank enthusiasts, but between my Dad and I, we'll soon get some folks thinking armoured. The hobby shops are totally not interested in Heng Long (you could put an eye out!). And info seems to be very sparse online.

So, can anyone say for sure?

www.Matotoys.com and in Canada their shipping is quite cheap. Make sure you pick up spare parts (shipping will be free as they just pack them in with the tank.

I actually almost bought from rchobbydepot, or vivahobbies as his eBay handle calls him. I was scared off by his 3 day policy, and ordered from the US instead. But he has a fantastic deal on metal upgrade, drive wheels and main idle wheels and tracks and steel motor assemblies for $75, and only $13 for shipping. I've already sent him an email asking if he will be getting in for my M26 anytime soon (he had, but does not have advertised now). Of course, he has the upgrade kit for my Dad's Tiger in stock..... ( )

Man, the anticipation is killing me. I just love Dad's Tiger.....it's sitting here on my workbench to "test" for him since he is not going to be able to for another 2 1/2 weeks. Hope I'll be able to put it back in the box afterward. It's just screaming to be let out to torment my (wife's) cats.

If he's not getting it for 2 1/2 weeks the decision looks pretty simple to me! Tear into that one and buy him another one!

Tempting, but I have already bought a Pershing and a Panther for myself. Very tempting, especially as I have just finished testing his Tiger out. I now understand the actual operation- the instructions just do not explain very well. So it has two ways to "shoot" the cannon- the electronic way with the kick-back and noise, and the actual BB shooting way with the up on the joystick (sounds like it pulls back the spring then lets loose). The smoker works fine, but what is A and C for? I read that B is smoke, but not what the other two positions are for.... And I'm glad for the volume control- I can see how the noise will get tiresome sometimes (like while my wife was watching a movie and I was chasing the cats ).

I have another question- how well do 6mm paintballs work with these tanks?

Thanks for all the info- I'm learning lots.

The ABC switch is just an on or off switch for the smoker,

Paintballs can be used but don't work well or break using a stock gun, it needs to be made to fire harder to break the paintballs, there are guy's on here that have done it.

If you break your dad's Tiger I and can't fix it before he gets home, You know he'll want that Pershing M26 Have fun.

unfortunately 6mm paintballs won't work in the stock HL tanks because the gun's are not powerful enough. I will be listing on ebay one of my upraded guns that will make the tank shoot about 300% harder allowing for paintballs to be used.

Thomasjohnmurphy, when will you be listing and how much is this upgrade? I might be interested, have not shot my Dad's tank but I'm always interested in "more power" (visions of Tim Taylor....)

Also, where can I get the Airsoft Hop-Up? It is part of every writeup I see for these tanks (shoots 25m with hop-up), but I have never seen the hop-up. Great tanks, but lousy instructions and communication from Heng Long.

I'm still reading the posts from the past- I was particularly interested in adding authentic welds to the tanks. Some of you fellows have done some fantastic work- almost too beautiful to actually use. My M26 is back-ordered, two weeks minimum until they get it in then a week and a half shipping time..... <sigh>

But my Panther will arrive tomorrow. I have compared it to pics of the real Panther- it is way off from accurate, isn't it? I see the idle wheels are backwards, the drive wheel is wrong, the front and back slope of the body is wrong, and that is just from looking at pictures. Is there more innacuracies? Is it possible (or worth the effort) to rectify the wrongs and make it accurate? I'm thinking it will be just good for a target tank, or for my kid or wife to use on the off chance they want to play. Still, at least once it arrives, I can dig in!

There is no hop up feature in the stock guns. That was copied by the Chicoms from Tokyo Marui's advertisements who do use it. Not a big deal with a more powerful gun. I think John's gun have them anyway.

There are poor man tricks to rearrange the wheels to look more like a Panther. Or you can get the metal wheels. Take a close look at the lower hull and running gear and you'll see that it's using the Tiger I lower hull. That's why everything is off. Can you accurize it? Sure, it's a lot of fun and you can do as little as redoing the front plate to sectioning and lengthening the hull. You can rearrange and modify the Tiger wheels to look like the Panther or get the Mato metal wheels, sprockets, idlers and tracks made for the Panther.

Search this forum and Panzerketten's there are tons of builds done on the Panther, YHRs comes to mind as one of the greats!

HL really dropped the ball with the Panther, which is a crying shame as it the real thing is a great looking tank. HL's model is just a travesty of cheapness. I don't think they got anything right on it. They probably won't do another one either

They didnt necessarily drop the ball, they just tried to get two tanks from one chassis, albeit a non suitable one and early on in HL's history (from there look at what we get now, pretty darn good accuracy).

I wouldnt expect they will do another (Panther), they already have one. For "us" enthusiasts its an issue, for the general kid's "tank for christmas" (the target audience) we're pretty lucky they bother to get anything right. Look at all the pure toy-tanks out there, mix and match junk that makes no attempt at all to look like a real-life counterpart: just tracks, a gun and plenty of odd "fantasy" add-ons.

To me, at least HL is modelling after real tanks, going to great length on scale and features and as good as they are theyre still getting better with every release.

Well, my Panther arrived (or actually due to a postal code issue, I picked up from the Fedex depot) last night. It may be inaccurate, but it sure is fun! Unfortunately, it is old stock and is not as good of quality as my dad's Tiger but after spending the morning figuring out why the canon would not fire (old grease and a weak motor, not to mention a bad solder job on the motor itself) my Panther is five by five. Since I have the tracks off, I am breaking in the drive motors by running them low speed without tracks. These tanks are amazing I have to admit, the casting of the track links being so precise as to roll like a chain is boggling to my mind. And the cannon shoots quite well, now that it works. My M26 may be taking a long time to come in (talked with a rep from Raidentech last night- could be over a month before I see it), but at least I have a Panther in good working order to practice with.

Oh, and did I mention that my eBay Panther turned out to be an unadvertised S&S?
