Is there any way to change the soft cut off on the ESC that comes with the Kit? I am experiencing very short flight times, 3.5 minutes approximately. I have checked the gear clearance and belt tension. I also checked for a loose connection between ESC and motor( Bad connections can cause high current draw). So far I have found nothing amiss.
I have 2 Kong Power 2200 MAh batteries, 2 Eflite 1800 MAh batteries and 1 battery that is 22o Mah< I forget the brand. All I am doing is hovering in the front yard. I do have a light training gear that I built out of carbon arrow shafts and ping pong balls on the heli. I realize this will add load to the motor. When the soft cutoff kicks in I set the bird down then if I check the pack the voltage is 3.9, 3.8 this should be in the meat of the pack. I used to fly a Schluter 50 and a Raptor 50 a couple of years ago, this is my first venture into the electrics.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

TIA
Regards
Dwight

I think this is the speed controller the B400 uses and this is the manual for it. http://www.e-fliterc.com/Products/Support.aspx?ProdID=EFLA1025

Hope that helps.

Nick

Your welcome. I hope you can get some longer flight times now. If you turn off the soft start just be carefull once you notice a power loss the battery was discharged too much. With the more expenisve chargers in the $100+ range it will tell how many mAh are put into the battery. Then with that info you can calculate how many mAh you use per minute. Then you can take the rated capacity of the battery and times it by .8 and divide it by the mAh/minute. Now you have an estimate of how long you can fly without going over the 80% discharge level.

I think something else must be going on.
Even at my high altitude I can easily get 5-6 minutes of hovering, on the 1800mAh batteries, and still have an ending voltage of around 3.7-3.8V per cell.
Check for binding in other places or even bad tracking can rob power/lift.
Check ESC and battery temps, high readings there can also be a sign of problems.

Thanks
I am currently looking for any binding, tightness, power robbing problems. I feel like it is something simple that I am missing......being new to the electrics.

TIA

Hi evdreamer

Have you any sugestion about my question? You likes me a expert.
Very interesting these ESC issues. Times ago in this forum, someone said upgraded you heli using a 40a ESC with heatsink. Why not 25a ESC with heatsink (see www.e-fliterc.com)?

Thanks

I think the stock B400 uses a 25A ESC, but I prefer at least a 35A ESC for 400-450 sized helicopters. I think people were saying the 25A ESC was working too hard and giving them problems.

I agree. I replaced my B400 with a 35 AMP Align BEC/ESC - no overheating anymore. My new ESC can be programmed as well, so that makes it quite a bit nicer.

I had a chance to fly again and the ESC is getting extremely hot just before it shuts down. I touched it and I could not keep my finger on it. I checked it with a non contact temp gun and it was 154 F this was after a minute or two of cooldown. I am going to replace it today.
