My step-grandson is visiting and of course, all of these RC trucks have him wanting to drive one. So off we went! He was running the new XL, I just opened the HSN 1/4 turn and let him rip. He was doing really well with it and I had fired up the Truckzilla. After running around for about 30 minutes, I leaned out the XL a little so he could get more speed and he slid it into a curb and flipped it in its lid. Of course, it would die before he got there.

Since he was blazing around with few problems, I turned over the Zilla and headed back to the pickup with the XL. I heard the Picco sounding like it was idling way too fast and it was not screaming around like normal. By the time I got him shut down, it was hot, very hot sounding. I grabbed it and pulled the stick out that was wedged between the front tire and the rear swing arm. The right front tire was sliding and the left front was spinning. I dropped it and temp checked it, 334 degrees. Instead of shutting it down, I opened the HSN needle 1/4 and drove it around. Of course it sounded flat and he was ready to go. It had to be much higher than that before I shot it. It did come right back to 200 after a few quick circles running rich. I am sweating this one as that has been my favorite truck and engine for quite some time now.

I guess tomorrow will tell, a clean air filter, a new day, crossing my fingers and hoping it did not die. I am not upset with him, it was just one of those freaky things and he would never have known the difference. I guess the worst case would be a sleeve and piston. BB

I overheated my picco 27 a few times (350-375) as well as got sand in it once. 8 gallons later and it still has massive power and pinch. In other words, dont sweat it. These mills are made of high quality materials.

Thanks, it was coming down a lot when I temped it. It had fallen back to a pretty normal idle, it was sounding like it had a big air leak or was ultra lean. I wish I would have checked it right away to know how high it was. I was just glad it did not lock up. BB

I am sure I was there or higher, yours did not have that lean scream going on when you killed it. I hope not though. BB

Ya BB I think you'll be ok. I had my P3 up to 359 last week. Just like your situation it didn't stay at that high temp for very long, and I did the samething, I didn't turn it off I just richened it up and ran it around for a bit, and temps came down. All I can say after running this week it's just getting stronger. No damage what so ever. I am totally amazed with this P3 thing with the 086!!!

It still sounded good and was yanking the front tires, even a little rich. I am hoping the high speed wail comes back. Thanks for the vote of confidence. BB

Now is the time to make that leak down test. You will know right away if you need a new piston and cylinder.

Your best bet is after the leak down test, if that proves out you still have some compression, pull the engine out and open the back plate. Check to make sure the rod bearing did not open up on you. If the rod looks good, I would simply flush out the inside of the engine with some brake cleaner to remove any oil that had overheated and started to turn into coke. Then spray inside with wd40. This would then be a great opportunity to re seal the backplate and carb and other dab areas.

My bet is you will be good to go. Probably just a little looser, but running great.

i beleive the piston material melts at 1700 F ...so 330 is nothing at all to worry about....... I have seen these mills take some serious amounts of abuse and they always come back for more.... I have a 6 gallon Picco JPX 21 that still gets stuck at TDC with no plug... These mills hold compression extremely well and a little extra heat will do no damage whatsoever....Running excessively lean at high RPM tho can cause damage really fast, even on a Picco

It seems fine, I am running out of Trinity 35 and switching over to Byron's 30 Gen 2. The last of the Trinity was being run in the Picco when it got hot. The Byron's seems to flow easier or take less fuel, everything I put it in is too rich. The Picco was really too rich after I gave it that spin of the HSN yesterday. It was back to wheel standing and screaming today. Thanks guys, and it is a relief to hear the little bad boy screaming again. BB

Yup I thought it was something like that. Mine has take much abuse and it also keeps coming back for more and it's breaking my rig up!!! Monday it broke the front center dogbone, today it broke the rear center dogbone and trashed the front diff all from WOT runs no jumps. Still running the 17/47 gearing. I should've either replaced all or rebuilt all prior to installing the P3. The 359F temp I had a week ago has had no ill effect on the P3 at all.

I would take the engine apart and check it to make sure that there is no internal damage. Do some cleaning because at those temps you'd be surprised as to what the oil turns into.( Using Byron's race gen2) I ran my JPX .28 which is basically the same picco .28 in a 15 min main. It sounded like crap after 8 min and when I pulled my truggy off the track after the race it was at 345 degrees and it smelled like it was cooking. I took it apart and cleaned it. I got rid of all the nasty stuff and I'm still using it. Make sure that you inspect all parts. The reason my overheated was because the flywheel nut came loose. (Still don't know how this happened!) The whole clutch and bearings were toast. I'm sure your engine is fine. The fact that this engine is still running strong after that scenario is what convinced me to buy another picco .28 for my sons Savage X. Like mentioned here these engines take a beating as long as you don't get dirt or sand inside of it.
