I traded an engine for this NIB Picco .60. I'm waiting on it to arrive. Has anyone owned and flown one of these? I understand they are very similar to OPS's.

The Rossi header should fit since it has an inside diameter of 24mm and my Picco's exhaust port is 22mm in diameter plus the thickness of the rubber o-ring. I imagine I can try different o-rings until I get a snug fit.

I'd appreciate any info about this exotic Italian critter.

Thanks.

David

Hi! these engines are stronger than OPS. Run it with 20% castor and 5% nitro. I used to fly it with 11*7 1/2 prop.

Thanks windcosmic. I'm glad it's a strong one. I heard back from Sahak, the proprietor of Rossi USA, and it looks like the Rossi header will work fine. I might need to try different o-rings until I get the best fit.

I've started using Powermaster GMA Stunt fuel in all my engines lately. I run a lot of old engines and European engines and they really like this blend. It's 5% nitro, 22% oil, 50/50 castor/synth. And, it comes in a metal can! My new OS AX .55 runs great on it, too, with a very low idle and excellent transition. Plus, I get a nice smoke trail that helps me practice maneuvers.

Sure with 22 % of oil the engine will last longer. My picco had the slide carburetor type that fitted the OPS,too . Anyway, this Picco .60 is one of the last .60 produced by picco, so i am anot sure if it has some parts which are interchangeable with OPS. I am sure that the two piece cranckcase version (the older) had the front end that could be mounted in the OPS and the conrod was identical, too.

Just bolt an 11x7 on the shaft and run it

I flew a couple of Picco 60 engines in the early 1980s. The engine design did not change much, but the carb on yours is the newer (super tigre-like) design.

Nothing at all mysterious. They run well.

Yes, the rossi headers do fit. R4 plug worked nice.

Thanks Bob. Sahak at SG Rossi USA has been very helpful and quick with his emails. I'm going to order his header and run it with a pipe.

I have a bunch of NOS Top Flite Super M props still in the boxes, never used: 11x7, 11x7.5, 11x7.75 and 11x8. I will break it in with the 11x7.

Why such a cold plug if I'm only using 5% nitro?

because most of these engines have a high static compression ratio, and are less likely to detonate at high rpm and load, if it comes with head shims add one thin one

The R-4 is not really cold, more like Medium. The engine just seemed to like it. I ran R-4 or R-5 plugs, or jsut K&B 1-L in the Rossi .61 engines too.

Run it from the box first..... probably will run great as is on 5% fuel. If it acts goofy, then put a head shim in.

Just some input.
Today I just run my Rossi 65 and my OPS 60 boyh with carbon pipe.
They are killer engines, but the rossi seams to have more power.

Good luck with yor Picco, I want one to

Thanks everyone. I'll order an R4 or two while I'm at it.

Thanks onewasp. The props are getting good use.

The Picco arrived along with the header from SG Rossi USA. It's a perfect fit.

I will try to run it this weekend.

It weighs about the same as an SF .61. So, now, I have a choice to make for my UFO. I can set up the SF with a pipe to turn a 12x8 at around 12,000, or set up the Picco to turn higher rpms with an 11x7.5. I'm not sure what rpm to expect out of the Picco. Does anyone have a ballpark target figure? These two engine setups seem like they would fly the plane quite differently, but maybe not.

Stick with the engine you built the UFO for in the first place.....

But put the picco on a test stand

No experience with those Picco's, but what a cool looking motor! Reminds me of Rossi. Sure would like to find one of those just for fun. Congratulations and Enjoy it!

Wow, that was exciting! I just ran my very first tuned pipe. It took me several minutes to find the right needle valve setting to get it running ( don't have the engine's manual). At first I used the pressure fitting on the Rossi header and the rpms seemed to pulse; I didn't have it leaned out, either. I switched to the pressure fitting on the pipe, which is just before the widest part, and it really smoothed out. Man, this thing howls at WOT! I used an APC 11x8. I have read that pipes make needle settings more critical and this seems to be the case with the Picco. It didn't take too much turning to make it jump to a lean setting.

I haven't even started taching it or cutting the header. I will need to do this at the field since it's a bit loud for the neighbors to tolerate for long. Even at the stock length you can tell this thing is really screaming.

I need to find out the thread size of the crankshaft. I didn't have the correct spinner adapter to use an aluminum spinner, so I used a Goldberg plastic spinner. That was a mistake as it kept flying off! So, if anyone knows the thread size I'd be grateful. I want to use a red anodized spinner nut which will match the head.
