I bought a new HL proportional smoker from ebay but when I plug it in I get nothing. I was also given a few extra wires which implies it needs additional work. Has anyone installed one of these things and if so what's the wiring?

One set of wires goes to the board, the other two pairs are soldered to the motors for "sense" of how fast the tank is going (to provide the appropriate amount of smoke)

Does it matter which motors (left and right) each pair goes to? And what's the polarity?

I don't think it really matters which way they go to the motors or which set goes to which motor, as it only provides voltage for "sense" of how fast the motors and therefor the tank is going to and gives smoke to suit.

It's quieter (not being at full rpm all the time) and will probably last longer (the element not being at maximum heat all the time)

Much. At least the one in the PZIV was. Much quieter and more realistic.

OK tanks guys it's wired up and seems to work. It doesnt want to seem to do anything until after you've supplied some current to one of the motors and then it kicks off. Other than a new PCB, it looks identical to the old one, but the motor RPM is much, much lower so none of that awful (and power-hungry) noise.

The polarity of the motor leads IS important. It produces more smoke going forward than going back.

Going to ask a favour here but do any of you guys with the prop smoker have any clear shots of the circuit board to show where the wiring comes from??

Regards Rob

Mine came with four 'pads' of solder connected to diodes (underside). I soldered 4 wires to these and messed about with the connections to the motors until it seemed to work right. You will need long wires to stretch from one end of the hull to the other.

cheers panzerfaust
the only problem is all i have is the circuit board and no wiring at all was going to try a fan in place of the noisey motor setup
but didn't want to fry the board attempting to wire her up

Yeah you don't need a fan at all, just a way to reduce the RPM of the motor. A poor-mans solution would be a simple capacitor-discharge circuit that powers there motor briefly, then cuts out, recharges and powers it again.

all i've got here is the non prop smoker body and the prop circuit board minus the wiring

going with the fan as they are silent and slower speed for the smoke so not a lot will come out on tickover then when the tank is powered up more comes out more reliable than the piston pump too
