is this a joke? you drive around this little death box that people point at to get what? 40mpg?

really, you know something is up, this car is capible of such fuel economy, yet only gets good gas economy? the geo metro got 55mpg, even the 2000 toyota corrola got around 40mpg, more than what it is today! it seems to me that cars are getting smaller but staying at the same efficincy.

whats up?

The oil companies are evil. The Model T got 25 mpg, why are we still around that point? Do we really need over 200 horses to get us around?

Electric motorcycles is where its at.

That pretty much sums up the problem right there. No, we don't need 200 horses to get us around. And as for the ForTwo, yeah it should get better fuel economy for its size and weight, but it's a surprisingly fun car to drive. Most of the people who bash it haven't driven one unfortunately.

I still wouldn't buy it, as there are many better options, but it's not a poor car either.

My buddies' old diesel Mercedes gets about 38-40 MPG...

But yeah, it seems just a little odd that many older vehicles, whether gas, diesel or multi-fuel, get better gas mileage than many newer or "modern" vehicles.

The cool thing about the ForTwo is that it's well suited for an all electric conversion, I've seen some good ones too.

It got 5 stars NCAP on crash testing, this makes it as safe/safer than any BMW, MERC, 4X4. Also, people bu it becasue the small engine . doesnt need much maintence, also no offence but some of you guys talk through your @$$, your comparing a petrol engine car with a diesel...

Several things...

1) The Fortwo is NOT made for fuel economy. I don't know what made anyone think it was. It is fuel economical only because it has a very small engine, but because it has a small engine, it also needs aggressive porting and cams so that it doesn't feel like it's powered by a go-kart engine. 70hp is impressive for a 1.0l engine. It is designed for city driving, in tight spaces and for easy parking, fuel economy was not the goal, but it IS fairly economical nonetheless

2) It's not a Death box, it is in fact one of the safest cars to crash in.

3) They are unreliable, and poorly constructed. Above that, due to the shoehorning of stuff into the car, the parts are very expensive. Every person I ever talked to who owned one, had some kind of problem with the transmission, and it was a costly repair.

4) I hate them.

I don't need a 200+ hp car, but I do want one. The Honda S2000 makes 240hp from a 2 litre engine, and gets about 26mpg (averaged). More economical than the model T, even though it has 100 times as many horses. I'd say that's progress.

Foxy, there is a dental company in England which use smart cars to deliver their equipment, so the cars are working nearly full time, in the newspaper a couple of months back, one of their smart car did 300,000Km without anything breaking at all. Now that is a true feat of engineering. Also they are also known as being the most reliable cars made by Bercedes Benz.
But I do also hate them, and it really annoys me when you see that there is no room left to park becasue an annoying smart has parked sideways meaning that 2 largers cars cant fit at all!

Your Honda produces alot of pwer for a small engine becasue its so high revving, i think its like 8000RPM, thats like a V8

Foxy, you got it right
every one assumes that the smarts were made for fuel economy!!! which they were NOT
fuel efficiency is retarded because most people do not know fact about how a engine uses fuel.
we all need 200+ h/p for sure
if you see a large car saw V8, you assume it gets bad mileage
I own a large Cadillac eldorado ETC it has a V8 northstar with 350 h/p . i average...... 28.2-29.7 MPG on a NORMAL day. while driving on the hi way only at 1500 RPM at 70 MPH i get 31+. first off it is accomplished by fuel management system, as well as running at only 1500 rpm at 70mph. when you little Toyota runs about 3200 RPM ( i know my sister has a echo). our fuel usage can be compared. altho the toyota dose not have a accurate read out on MPG . we estimate it dose 36-37 on the hi way and 31 in town.
now. would you like to drive a gutless wonder. maybe with all the best Asian material and a 100% assurance that its cheap and going to break.
or a nice fat leather chair with a animal in front you, an 480Te trans axle to put the power to the wheels to gobble up a infinity G35 .... AND get better gas mileage.
wake up and smell the coffee ( i do. i should go get my self another mug full of it!) there is more to fuel economy then meets most people eye. many ways to do as well.

well my car has a little 2.3 5cyl turbo, but it gets only 30hwy and 19city, but it makes up for it in power, 250hp and 222pounds of torq and redlines at 5.5K, thats LOW for a little engine, gas milage is unbelivible if uninterouped, around 36mpg but acceleration dumps fuel into the cylinders.... alot.

as for deisle, i think that is the best way to go as far as econmy, plus, you can run them on used veggie oil if you wanted.

and as for the smart, it may be safe for sationary objects, but if you get side swiped from a truck.....

most new cars with V8 become V6 when your driving slowly, plus the bigger the engine is, the less hard you need to push the throttle as it can cope easier at much lower RPM giving you a higher milage, this is why a BMW M3 is more efficient than a prius and why the Smart is not as economical as it should be.

Now then, if you're really tight, you can get one of these babys: http://news.bbc.co.uk/player/nol/newsid_7240000/newsid_7242000/7242070.stm?bw=bb&mp=wm&news=1&nol_storyid=7242070&bbcws=1

As for the discussion. Fuel economy is fuel economy. I want good gas mileage, but I also want a fun car. I would personally rather have a 1996 Porsche 911 then a energy saving automobile, but that's just me; if the 911 got good gas mileage, that would be a plus. I actually really want to get a motorcycle though for a fun and efficient ride.

Hmm...come to think of it, I saw a smart parked in a lot around here a couple weeks ago - it really is the funniest thing to see around here, especially since most of the parked vehicles around it were lifted pickups with large tires...

But yeah, vehicles are the smart are only really safe in city and probably aren't go great on the freeway, it's the kind of car really shouldn't be found in the US. I don't think one of them would survive if I ran it over with a M35A2, weighing in at a good 7-8 tons empty.

On another note - these new Toyota Tundras that have the V8 and are 4x4 get worse mileage than my 3/4 ton 4WD V8 F250 that has larger tires than it should have without the lift. They also cost about 15-20K more than my truck...

When I still had the two barrel 318 in my 73' Challenger, it used less gas than my 92' V6 4-runner. Not that the two vehicles are comparable, the 4-runner is 4WD and probably heavier than the Challenger...
