I need to know how to attach a launch point to the bottom of my plane without ripping out the balsa of this beautiful new plane of mine. Its the HET FA-18 "Blue Angel's Version" at EJF.com Single 70MM EDF

Thanks,
Robert

On some of my foam planes I epoxy a piece of lite ply on the inside of the fuse, the ply needs to be large enough to spread the load. Its never ripped out even from the cheaper foam planes.

A foam airplane doesnt have much mass to it though, I have a balsa airframe with a 4s-4000Mah and a HET 70MM fan.
Im worried about the mass being to great for the sudden pull of the bungee launch system. If anyone has any picture of how theres is done I would appreciate it. When I get the plane this week in the mail I will post some pictures.

I have built two of these and both have flow great. As for as a tow point, the manual says that there is supposed to be a predrilled hole at 5 3/4" from the nose cone seam. I didn't find the hole on either model. There was a support at that location so epoxied the supplied hook in front of that brace. To make sure that I had it epoxied good I cut a small hole from inside the plane (under the location of the battery) and applied the epoxy from there. It has been holding up fine and you don't have to remove any of the monocote to install additional bracing. Both models are still doing fine and we fly them with either 2 - 3cell 2100mah or 2 - 3 cell 2500mah batteries.

I ordered the package from EJF for the single 70MM unit, the dealer said to expect over a hundred mile an hour. What you think?
Here's whats in it... Im also adding in a scale light set.

-HET-RC EDF fan 6904
- Typhoon motors EDF 2W-20
- Mah 3700-4S 14.8V

Robert,

That will fly around 110mph-115mph as it is a hot setup. You may want to add some reinforcements to the wing spars as the model was originally designed for 10cell NiMH's and 3S lipos.

I didnt think the F18 ever got that quick even on the 2W20, its the most draggy of all the HEt airframes. Most people hand launch the F18, I have even seen guys handlaunching the F16, albeit with a hot power system.

Last HET I setup was a starfighter, 2W20 with HET fan, proper exhaust nozzle (the F18 exhaust is pretty average) decent battery pack, was making 750 watts, lucky to be doing just over 100mph, my foam F16 with 2W20 and 2200 4s 25 packs has been clocked at 125mph on doppler and it crapped all over the F104.

I talked with the guys at EJF and they said the wing loading would be fine with the setup because of the elevon style controls it limits the manuverability. I am not a master of balsa yet im still working on improving my craftmanship as far as working the wood and definatley can not cover worth a darn even with the easy coverings.
