I have the LST1 and i was wondering when i hit the brakes i hear a cracking noise is sounds nasty. A guy at the track told me that he diff's have plastic gears and the momentum fron the tire is causing that. What would be a good upgrade for these diffs if this is what i am hearing and do i need oil with the gears. The breaks are brand new so it not the brake making noise

First of all, the gears in the diff are all made out of metal. Every single one of them. If you're noticing this sound only when braking then I'm guessing there's something wrong with the brake installation or the brakes are binding on the set screw that holds the forward output cup on the transmission.

The only upgrade for the diff is a visous oil instead of the grease they supply from the factory. The thickness of the oil is upto you.....1K-10K is preferred by racers because it allows the truck to be agile while bashers go for 10K-50K to get maximum power down to the ground and don't care much for handling, grip, etc.

he is talking about the differential cases. They are plastic. I remember with my LST1 they cracked as well making that cracking noise. Here is what you need to fix the problem if you look at the outside of the diff case I am sure you will see a hair line crack.

Buy 2 the rear will go eventually, if not already did.

My original brakes made a freaky clacking noise when the truck was brand new... I bet thats what you are hearing. Try pushing the truck real hard with out the engine running, hit the brakes and see if you can hear it? and then get the twin disk set-up from Crazy Nut Racing. Look at my new post "Aftershock Rocks the Richter Scale" to see what they look like.

Mine did that yesterday, and about two tanks after, I lost rear wheel drive. I was about to take the whole truck apart to get at the transmission, but noticed that one of the set screws that holds the cups onto the output shaft on the tranny was loose, so I put threadlock in it and tightened it up. The cracking noise is made when the wheels still want to spin, but the transmission is not moving, so the cups that hold the CVDs slip off the output shaft. This might not be what is wrong with yours, but check it just in case, to save you from a lot of greif down the road.
