the hyper 7 is more made for bashing and recreational racing. If you are going to be a competitive racer, you need to spend the extra money and buy the hyper 8.5, because you'll be spending less money buying a better version of the hyper than upgrading a lower version to-spec. And, if you spend the extra money for an 8.5, you could buy an 8ight rtr, or even better, a Caster ZX1-R rtr. The great thing about the 8ight is that it includes a spektrum radio, but really, it depends if you want a better-for-your money buggy(ZX1-R rtr) or the buggy that you will be spending money upgrading(8ight) Look at my thread: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7707411/tm.htm With your price range, you will NOT get a good racer rtr. The only way you can get a good racer is if you a. spend money on a rtr and spend lots of money upgrade it b. spend money on a good rtr out of the box and spend very little upgrading it, the ZX1 incidentally is one of the strongest rtr's out of the box(ZX1-R) c. spend a LOT of money on an excellent rtr and spend literally no money upgrading it, but still spending lots of money replacing broken parts(8ight) ZX1-R comes with lots of CNC 6061 aircraft grade aluminum parts, and thicker shock towers... all comes together to make a better rtr than the 8ight rtr. I know the 8ight is great, in the kit form, but the rtr is really a meh thing. If you were into kits, you could get the ZX1-R factory team kit, which comes with 7075 aluminum
