I have a compaq V2000 laptop that I've had for about two years and the usb drives died on me in febuary. Compaq was no help and since i dont have a warranty anymore its nothing they would really do, except for tell me it was a problem with the drivers and they needed to be reset. Well after doing that 5 times I took in to best buy where the geek center guy said they just went bad and that compaq laptops werent that great anyway. So I have been basically using it to browse the internet since I wont be able to attach any peripherals to it but I wanted to know was if I could do anyhting else with this thing? Not to fix the drives because besides another mother board its not happening but maybe sell the screen, hardrive and or ram card and get something for it or if that is even worth it. Any suggestions are welcomed so what do you guys think?

Its prolly noy worth upgrading it any but you laptop prolly has one of those slots on the side where you can slide in cards. It might be worth it to buy a usb card that would slide in that slot and have usb ports again. But best buy has some nice laptops for around 700 if where looking to get a new one.

And some personal experiance here. DO NOT BUY GATEWAY!!!! I got a Toshiba a few months back and love it. So thats my two cents...

the usb ports might be disabled in the bios.

That's what I was thinking. Or, like Nick said, possibly get hold of a PCMCIA card with a USB port.

why do you say do not buy gateway? i have a gateway desktop it is very good and both my sisters have gateway laptops neither have had problems with them

i would just like to say that the best buy person was lieing about compaqs not being that great. ive had 3 compaq laptops, and no problems. had a dell, and it sucked

Yes they are very cheap. Just holding mine it felt cheap and flimsy. And the cd drive felt like it would break everytime i used it also it just ran hot. Well now to talk about the real quailty issues where the power cord pluged in it would break and stop charging teh battery. After fixing it 4 times in 1 yr and them sending me a "new" one which turned out to be refurb that one did it too. And they where like we dont care that this has already happened 4 times we will not fix it again warranty is up and it will cost 250 fix... Same thing happened to the dude i work with but with his power button. It kept breaking and after fixing it mutiple times in warranty period they just dont care after that.

Again my toshiba is great it feels strong and sturdy and dose not get anywhere near as hot as the gateway did.

Was not disbled in bios, tried the card and for some reason it still wouldnt work and I definitely dont want to upgrade it just wanted to know if i could sell the parts off of it. I know saying one brand is crappy wasnt nice but I was just stating what the guy at best buy said. My experience with most things is sometimes things break and some people look for certian things but unless something is just unanimously bad I just figure its the person or maybe a defective lot.

Does the laptop have Bluetooth?

You can buy Bluetooth usb hubs. You can connect 3 or 4 usb devices to it and then communicate to them through Bluetooth. Its not the fastest or ideal but $50 is better than scrapping the whole thing.

unfortunately it dosnt have bluetooth, I didnt know laptops came with it at the time. Im pretty up to date with whats new with electronics but not everything.
