I have a ZDZ 40 RE installed in my P51.
I bought the engine used from a guy here on RCU with excellent credentials.
The engine, according to the seller, was running perfect, and than it sat on his shelf for about a year or two.

I am trying to starting it and after it "burps" with the choke closed and full throttle, I throttle back, open the choke, and after one or two flips, it start, races up for a second or two and than dies.

I have been trying different low needle settings, 1 turn open, 1 1/2, 2 and so on ...same result
The timing sensor is set per specification at 5mm from TDC.
I am using fresh gallon of 92 gasoline ($4.54 ...holy crap) with 1:50 Zenoah full synthetic oil.
Gasoline freely flows from the carb to the engine....
Cowl is off.

After a few tries of starting, racing up and dying, the engine "floods", I remove the plug which is very wet, dried it off and start the process all over again.

Any idea ??? Am I missing something ?

All help is greatly appreciate it...please help
Thanks .

After sitting for a while the diaphragms wiil stick to the carb body, Take to 4 screws out and tap lightly to remove and see if you can remove the diaphragm, and if you got it off without damage rub a little oil on it and replace, Just take close watch on how it came off so you can replace it the same way.

My ZDZ 50 NG is 2 turns out on the low and 1.5 on the high for starting settings. I'd try that on yours. Milton is correct that the carb parts can get stiff and also gummed up after sitting for too long (months). I'd take the carb apart and make sure all is clear and free inside.

One thing you might want to investigate is what carb it has on it?

IIRC, there were some issues with the original carbs supplied by ZDZ for the 40 size engines and RCS came up with a replacement that is supposed to work much better including easier starting.

You may want to consider checking with RCS about which carb you have, if it's the most recent version or not. If it's not the most recent version, you may want to consider changing it out rather than screwing around with the old one that won't run as well even if you get the current issue fixed????

Just a thought.....

Hi ..
thanks for the replys...
I took the Walbro completely apart and cleaned everywhere with carb cleaner.
Both screens, metering pin assembly and screen and I blew cleaner in every hole.
I am confidednt the carb is clean.

I reinstall it with proper low and high needle setting, and ......still does the same...races up for 1 or 2 seconds and than dies....
Any other suggestions ??
Thanks for the help

Are you using the starting method that is recomended by RCS/ZDZ? It goes like this: choke on, full throttle, ignition off, 5 flips (if fuel line dry may take more). Choke off, full throttle, ign off, 5 flips. Choke off, throttle at idle or 1 click up, ign on, should start in first flip and stay running. After the first flight, I start by choke on, full throttle, ign off, 1 flip. Choke off, full throttle, ign off, 5 flips. Choke off, throttle at idle, ign on, starts on first flip. If the engine dies after starting or still hard to start, then Low needle may need to be opened up a bit (richen). Hope this helps.

I also tried the "5,5,1" method on RC shocase with the same results...
Am I missing something ? I totally puzzled about this engine...
Thanks for the help

Are you sure you just don't have air in the fuel line that needs to be bleeded out before it stays running? Mine do that now and then. Keep trying until it's solid gas in the line/carb.

Hi!
It is very common that the fuel evaporates from the carb...so Choke it and look for air bubbles /or fuel coming to the carb.
Often you have to choke them for several minutes if the engine have been sitting for longer periods.

If the engine floods, instead of pulling the spark plug, you could try putting the throttle to wide open and ignition off and flip it over around 5 times. Then put the throttle back to idle and ignition on and try starting it. The flipping over at WOT with ign off will dry the plug out. Sounds like you best bet might be to send it in to RCS for a check up. I think it may be a problem with the carb, but I don't know enough about the crabs to help you out.

Hey Doomkind,

Have you tried to see if it is an ignition problem? Maybe a sparkplug or a sparkplug pipe? A had somekind the same problems sometime in the past with a 3W 28 competition ...The sparkplug pipe had problem and it had the same vices...
If the ignition is OK then it should be the carb....Sometimes if you screw the needles too much, then you destroy them...If this happens then you must send the carb to an expert to change the internal parts of the carb (needles etc.).
Kind regards
J.R.
