Anyone have any indoor experience with this plane? We fly in local gyms (not too big) during the winter and I'm trying to figure out if this will fit the bill

I bought one of these as my first 3d plane thinking that the cost of everything wasn't bad. well on first maiden, the plane flew right out of my hand and into the air with no problem, tracked straight as an arrow, I thought wow, this thing can really fly straight right out the box. using the reccomended outdoor motor setup. had plenty of power and was flying smoothly around the field and trying a few loops and a hover. well flew out of the hover as i didn't hold it long. climbed like crazy. cut the power and floated back to low level. flew the plane towards me and then away from me getting ready to land, when the plane got far enough away, i turned it back towards me. in the middle of the turn, I guess it snapped a little too hard with so much rudder authority, snapped right side of wings in half. Yep, both upper and lower wings came off the plane. this baby is very delicate and fragile. well as i watched the wing spiraling and the rest of the plane nose diving, i thought man what i could have done with that 300 bucks. But, right now i am glueing it back together from about 10 pieces and it is going together pretty good. will carbon fiber reinforce the wings and the fuse this time and try it again.

I'd give GP a hollar, I've been thrashing this thing since the review, I fly it in my dead end almost 3 days a week and I haven't had any issues I haven't caused myself.

Make sure you glue the carbon braces on as shown though, its pretty flimsy without all the braces being properly attached.

I am a member of the clay county flyers club at the sleepy hollow air field. All the braces are on as per the manual. It was a tedious job to put this thing together but i took my time cause it was so delicate. When the wing broke, the braces stayed in place. the whole wing stayed together but it just broke in half right at the cabane center strut.

Ah yes, about 3 blocks from my house. Say hi to Guybo, he and I flew P3s back in the day.

It's probably worth a call to Great Planes, you never know.

I just ordered a greatplanes pluma, and I can`t wait!
Since I allready have all the electronics at hand it seemed like a good deal.
Motor I will be using is a hyperion z14-05 which on the "paper" gives about 250 grams of thrust on a 2s setup. But in real life I think it is more powerfull than that!
I had it in a 300grams foamy and the vertical was unlimited.
2 eflite 7,5gr servos and a hs 55, 10 amp esc and 2s 450mah, with an 8x3.8 prop. Think this will be good

I was researching the Pluma and noticed that the Electrifly batteries listed in the manual are discontinued.

Does anyone know the reason for this?

I found some 450 mAh that fit the bill, not necessary that particular brand.

I am on my second Pluma. Now that I have had my share of do's and don'ts with this bird, I'll share a few.

Do not go by the instructions when you get to the ailerons. Well go by most of it, but not the measurement of the links. The manual says prepare all the links at 2-1/8" or 156mm. 156mm is not 2-1/8". Its 6-1/8".

Hot glue the gear into the fuse instead of the CA. You need that little flex it gives not to keep punching them through the fuse when you have less then stellar landings.  Shorten the pants in front and back so not to totally bust em off running through a bit of grass.

When you rig it with the rod, take extra care in getting it right. I kinda rushed my first and it needed a lot of trim changes ALL the time. My new one flies soo much nicer than the first!

Go with an ESC that is around the 12A mark as the 28-22-1380 peaks at 10.3. Why they call for an 8A is beyond me. Brown outs aren't cool especially when another club is watching you fly for the first time at their field. I've got a CC T-bird 18A instead of the T-bird 9.

Save the left- over foam from the kit as you'll need it for repairs. I flew my 1st one for over six months now. It sort of resembled this Franken Bird folks talk about. Only weighed about 10.5 oz with all those repairs. It would still be flying if it weren't for that Aito that ran into me! I chewed him up goood btw, lol! Now that guys got one too!

That brings up another point. If there are more than one in your group with this awesome lil foamie, you'll want to make yours stand out. Good old Tremclad in the stir can, not the spray can, sticks nicely and doesnt hurt the foam. Takes for ever to dry, but its workable in 12-24hrs depending on temp and humidity. Use the low tack masking tape to mask large areas and apply with a small foam roller, lightly.

Ya, it is kinda strange that Tower would recommend the 8A for the 28-22-1380:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0161p?&I=LZ2133

But on the Electrifly website they recommend the 12A for the 28-22-1380:

http://www.electrifly.com/motors/gpmg4505.html

I was thinking about getting the outdoor setup though:

I've flown the indoor set-up both in and out. If you plan on any indoor, go that route, my $0.02.

The pluma is an awsome foamy. There are 3 of use with them in our club now. Some of us are thinking about scratch building one that is smaller. something around a 20" wing span. smaller motom probably a hacker a10, the smaller one, I can't remeber the model. 2 cell 300 mah and some hs50 servos with there backs removed for less weight. We like the 32" pluma but we all agree that a smaller one would be fun in smaller gyms...

Hi,

I'm just thought of something and was curious to know if anyone knows how the Pluma with the Rimfire 370 and 12A ESC would work with a 7.4v 300mah 20C battery? The Electrifly recommends 11.1v but it says 7.4 can be used.

Thanks
John

I haven't even thought about 7.4 in my Pluma. It would slow your prop too much I would guess. The 1380 # is the revolutions per volt and you would be taking about 5000 rpm off the top end. 1380 x 7.4 = 10212 vs 1380 x 11.1 = 15318. The 450mAh 11.1 I use were about $18 CDN from my LHS.

What size prop are you flying with the 1380 Rimfire? I've got a GWS 8x4 in my box but I have to buy spares and wondering what to invest in.

I used an 8x4.7,a 9x4.7 and really preferred the 9x3.8 APC. Make sure you smoothen out the mold lines on the APC's. The edges are sharp enough to actually cut into the O-ring. The plane does not fly well without its prop!

I need to get my third as that happened to me in a hover and didn't have enough altitude to get out of it. Nosed in and blew the motor box apart and broke the tail off! It was kewl. Thankfully they are cheap!

Thanks. A 9X3.8 it will be. The trailing edge on the 18 inch APC glow props are like razors. I can imagine the thinner ones end up the same. I wonder why they do that?

I need my third now! My $0.10 mistake!  LOL  The well used o-ring popped in a hover and I nosed it in! The perfect height not to have enough speed over the elevator to get the nose up! It was POP! Twang! (the prop bouncin' of a rafter) then less than a second later it was snap, crackle, pop! It was a kewl crash! The nose literally blew apart, the tail snapped off aft fuse, motor box shattered, etc. It all stayed together! Flimsy as all heck but picked it up in one relative piece! Too much to repair, easier to buy a new one!

I got mine in the mail today.

Read a warning from another thread that some of the fuselages were coming in crooked. Went to inspect it and put a crack in the bottom foam just taking it out of the plastic. Dumb thumbs before the radio is installed. Nothing a drop of ca won't fix but, boy is this thing fragile! No flex at all.

I have some paper thin carbon fiber rods from a crashed flatty and may start reinforcing as I build.

I had asked a similar question about the 1380, but the same theory applies to the 1000 I guess. Here is the response I got:

"I haven't even thought about 7.4 in my Pluma. It would slow your prop too much I would guess. The 1380 # is the revolutions per volt and you would be taking about 5000 rpm off the top end. 1380 x 7.4 = 10212 vs 1380 x 11.1 = 15318"

So if you look at the 1000, your RPM will be 7400 with the 2S compared to 11100 with a 3S. That's a pretty big difference.

I just asked mainly out of curiosity as I don't even own a Pluma yet, but my other plane uses the smaller batteries. If you try it, please let me know how it worked.

John
