I just ordered a Great Planes Piper Cub 40 Fabric Covered ARF, from a local hobby shop. I was wondering if anyone that has had this ARF can tell me what they thought of it. This is going to be my Second ARF. The first is my SIG Kadet LT-40. So I'm still new to ARFs, I don't know to much about them. I have only built kits so far.

Is there anything I should watch for while assembling the Cub?
How does it fly, and land?

Thanks
Trevor

just for starters before you get heaps more replies, firstly the brand name of this kit is very very good [ greatplanes ] i must say they do a great job on there kits compared to many other brand names of arf,s. what you must do before you start on this model is add more epoxy glue around the engine mount / firewall areas to make sure all is glued up well, then thin out some epoxy with acetone and seal all the engine and fuel tank areas. you,ll have a great model when completed.

Hey tbucket... I see you are from Regina. Where do you fly there? I work in Regina and have been flying at The Windy Fliers and out at the Wascana Trails with a couple gents.
I have the Great Planes .40 size fabric Cub and love it. The old saying "flys like a Cub" holds true for this one. Right rudder is required on takeoff and when landing you will have to apply slight up elevator once on the ground to keep from nosing over. But in the air she is one sweet flier. I am powering mine with an OS .46AX with a Slimline pitts muffler and it has gobs of power. It will float around the sky at 3 clicks above idle.
When building, you may want to make sure that you attach the hinges in the wing struts better. They are made of a material similar to your control surface hinges and they aren't glued in very well. I drilled a very small hole through each strut and also through each bracket on the strut and put a small screw through it to hold the hinge from pulling out. Then I CA'd them in better. I have been flying it this way for 2 years and have had no problem at all. Also where the stuts attach to the wings and the fuselage, instead of screws to hold them on, I epoxied threaded inserts into the attachment points and used small bolts. Works way better for assembly and disassembly and you don't have to worry about stripping the wood out. These struts are functional and it probably would not be good to lose one in flight.
I fiberglassed the center wing section for extra strength too.

Cheers
Curt

I have my second one on the work bench now. The first one I built I sold several years ago when I got out of the Hobby.
Powered it with an OS 70 Surpass; which was plenty and it sounded great on low passes at low throttle; however; I fought ground loops during take off from pavement, and ended up installing a single axis gyro on the rudder and also the elevator.

Discovered later that if you take off from grass the ground loops are not a problem.
I also reinforced the hinges on the struts with screws, and fastened the landing gear fairings with screws.

It flys like a Cub and it is not a trainer. If your radio will allow ; it is a lot easier to fly if you coordinate the rudder with the Ailerons.

The kit is great and goes together fast.

An OS 46 AX is sufficient power but the 4 Stroke sounds a lot more realistic. However if you go with the four stroke go with the Max
allowed, I purchased a XL Magnum 52 4S, and it was not sufficient to power the plane; havent had it in the air since repowering with the XL 70 4S.

I have one, It's a great flyer. Match it up with a 70 four stroke engine ( I have a Magnum on mine), a 12x6 prop and let the good times roll. Very floaty, but as any Cub they like to turn into the wind on take offs and landings. You'll need to be on the rudder and I mean on the rudder or it'll ground loop on you, I promise. I'd recommend it, just be sure to use your left thumb from side to side.

I've been flying one on GP floats for about 3 years. OS .91 four stroke...you need that power with the floats and the fact that we fly out here at 5-6,000 feet. That fabric covering is Coverite 21st Century fabric- Tower carries it. If you get a roll you can do some nice rib stitching with it and it sticks to itself without air bubbles.

Best of Luck!

Sourkraut.

I'm a member of the Regina Windy Fliers. I do fly at the air field. But I have a shop on a farm North of town that has full size aircraft on it. We have a paved runway and I fly off of there as well.
