hi all,
I recently put in a working hull close support MG on my Tiger, which of couse entailed removing the top deck from the hull. In the course of doing this, I discovered that the main screw (the ones right on the bottom, two at the back and one at the centre front) on the rear left side had sheered its plastic tower doo dad that it screws into clean off at the base. Now its no biggy as the other screws are still there and of course I have the three ones above the tracks helping to keep it all together.

But how many people have experienced this problem, and what happens if all three main screws go? How do you securely fix the deck to the chassis

thanks,

Matt

There are a total of 9 screws securing the hull together, if you are breaking screw towers then the tank is receiving excessive shock/hard-crash, or overtightening the screws (don't tighten them until they turn no more, its just too much). Same goes for gearbox mounts, overtightening will cause damage to the mounts.

I run my Tigers around on only the 3 screws underneath (one at the front, two at the rear) in my backyard and no damage to mounts thus far, including my oldest HL Tiger. I just don't use the 4 screws above the tracks (the other two just hold the rear hull to the bottom hull) as its too much stuffing around removing tracks to open the tank, and it holds together well using just 3 screws (of 9)

That true wacky but they come from the factory broken already some times! Some guys glue them back down other screw in stand offs and then you can use a machine screws! YHR & and i think it was the Stuff, that had a neat fix for this,,, maybe they will add in!

Wacky makes an interesting point here and I may, with some addition, follow his logic. The screws that are located above the tracks seem to do nothing other than to increase the rigidity of the lower hull by holding it more tightly to the upper hull. I’d suspect that if they aren’t used, the lower hull will be less rigid, and the lower hull might need to be better braced than it was from the factory.

A couple of cross braces fitted to the lower hull will counter balance the removal of the screws above (or under the tracks dependant on your perspective) and make the innards of the tank more easily accessible without impairing the function of the running gear (gearboxes, axles and tracks) due to flexure of the lower hull without those screws being in situ.

I whish I had a spare tank to play with, this is stirring my interest very much.

Thanks Wackyheels, for making me think like a mechanic again, and for reminding me that I'm the son of a REME sargeant.

Cheers mate.
