I've been doing quite a bit testing with the production Mongoose systems in my ST's comparing them with a Neu/Tekin combo.

Neu/Tekin (The Brute) is a very strong and torqy motor combo and quite smooth for a sensorless system compared to other setups I have tried (Permax/Align/etc.). A big motor at 29mm diameter and can be geared through the roof. Runs cool in almost all circumstances. Draw backs are the magnets in the motor, they are very strong and so without fine finger control can make the car difficult to control in the air. Can cog or hesitate sometimes going from full brakes to full throttle immediately or from reverse to full throttle. The best system for bashers and brute force racers who spend more time in the top 3rd of their throttles.

The Mongoose's are 26mm can motors so have slightly less torque compared to a Neu but loads more than a 20mm can brushless motor and enough for incredible speed. They are sensitive to correct gearing and can over heat if geared just a few teeth in the wrong direction. The throttle control on these systems are matched by no other micro brushless system out there. The Mongoose is in my opinion the best racing brushless system out there. The best system for racers who spend more of their time in the lower 2/3rds on their throttle.

13.5 Mongoose (The Schumacher): best for indoor 18th scale racing
10.5 Mongoose (The Colin Mcrae): best all round system, outdoor racing and on larger tracks
8.5 Mongoose (The Starship Enterprise): Only for the insane speed pass guys. Not meant for racing as it cannot be geared appropriately to stay cool long enough.

The Mongoose is my system of choice in all circumstances.

I take out between 750-850mah during a 5min race with 3 or so laps of practise using the Mongoose.

This is my test fleet. I think it's important to do back to back or side by side testing when you do test as it's too difficult to really remember or be aware what sometimes is very small and subtle differences between comparable products.

I have 4 Mongoose systems (2 x 10.5, 13.5 and 8.5) and the Neu2.5Y/Tekin combo. I use the 2 x 10.5 Mongoose's side by side when I test car setups, tyres or battery capability.

Neu/Tekin - Mongoose 10.5 - Mongoose 8.5

The 13.5 motor on the ground will be my actual race motor

Yep, i would like to have the money you have in all of that stuff. I am seriously thinking about getting one of the vendetta st. I don't know if i will go brushless or not but those look like fun.

Vendetta RTRs are kinda like Barbie dolls-an opportunity to spend a lot more money.

So would you say that the 13.5 is the best fit for the ST? What made you choose it over the 10.5?

This is very interesting,I just ordered the 10.5 system along w/the Novak 14t,15t,15t pinion set for my Detta ST. Any recommendations on which pinion i should use...I will mainly be doing parking lot bashing and speed runs. BTW I will be using Elite 6 cell nimh packs if it makes any difference,no lipo's just yet but hopefully in the near future, any advice i can get would be greatly appreciated.

Gearing Mongoose systems is something you have to spend time getting right for the type of driving you will be doing. I run the 10.5 system at 12/49 and the 13.5 system at 13/45 for indoor carpet racing with big jumps. My motors stay within the appropriate temps (130-140F).

I choose the 13.5 as the best motor for racing indoors on carpet because it's fast enough. The 10.5 is great too but you have to turn the throttle down quite a lot otherwise you will just be overdriving the track going into corners too fast. The 13.5 also seems to run cooler and can work harder. The 10.5 is a better all round motor for guys running on bigger tracks and guys who do a bit of bashing as well.

What mah is those lipos in the picture above? I can't read what it says on them. I was just wondering because i am thinking about getting a vendetta st, but i will probably stick with the brushed motor and just use a couple different 2s lipos'.

Cool, that kinda answers my question. Would you say that the 13.5 has more torque than the 10.5?

The 10.5 and 13.5 feels to have similar torque at the gearing I run but vastly different top speeds.

Out of the lipo's in the picture above I would recommend the Flightpower Evolite 1600mah 7.4v if you have the money and the GE Power 1800mah 7.4v if you want that extra bit of runtime. Both are superb quality packs.

Here is a video of the 13.5 Mongoose geared at 13/45. It has oodles of punch!

Dr. Kabuboo,
Thanks for the video.

From what you have found, running 12/49 is the best ratio for the 10.5 correct? I do understand that everyone has a different driving style and different driving conditions. I really want to get the 10.5 system, but I don’t want to get it only find out that it will overheat and thermal out on me. I bash a bit and race on a friends backyard track that is about the size of the carpet track in your video, and sometimes run on a small off-road indoor 1/10 scale track. That being the case, would you say that the 10.5 would be a good fit for me? Should I be looking at the 13.5 instead?
