Hello,

I'm just getting back into the 1/2a flying (finally decided to dust off the Bee-Tween and get an engine) and I have a question.

I was looking through all my old Blackwidow stuff, and found a tank and pickup tube (has a good reed too). I'm picking up a SureStart this weekend and would like to know if the tank will fit. Will I need longer bolts to mount it, and if so, any idea what size they are. I'm not sure if the LHS carries much in the way of Cox accessories!!

Thank you all,

I can't wait to fly this airplane again, it was my first build and first flight way back in '88!!

All of the Cox reed valve tanks are interchangeable. At least I've never come across one that wouldn't fit. This assuming your Sure Start has the extruded aluminum case. I've never owned one of the cast cases.

Like David said, the tank should fit fine.

You will need longer mounting screws. The size is 2-56 x 15/16" fillister head for the larger tanks - I think the Black Widow tanks are the same size as the larger Bee tanks. I doubt you will be able to locate a 15/16" screw, but you can always get them in 1" and cut to length. The screw head will need to seat since it must seal the backplate to keep fuel from leaking around the backplate holes.

A socket head cap screw might work, but I don't know if the backplate countersink is deep enough or of sufficient diameter to accept the socket head. Based on some rough measuraments and engineering drawing of this size screw, it looks like it might - your best bet would be to have the backplate in hand when shopping. You can always verify the screw length by measurament with your backplate and tank - the screw should extend out about 1/8" where the tank mounts to the case.

If you have the original screws, they will work. Mixing and matching parts: The original Black Widow backplate has no fill or vent, only the needle on top. The original tank has fill and vent tubes so it will fly inverted.

The last version had the fill nipple and vent hole on the backplate (like the Babe Bee) and a metal (and later plastic) tank with no venting.

Just make sure you do not match up an unvented backplate to an unvented tank.

Oh, and DO remember to add the little seal between the backplate and tank on the venturi tube.

Good luck with it.

Thank you all for your quick responses!!!

I no longer have the actual engine, just a spare tank, so no back plate. The tank does have the 2 vents (for going inverted!!!), and I know that the SS backplate will need to be hooked up to this tank. I know I will not be able to do it internally (unless the LHS has a backplate with internal fuel pickup), and will have to modify the tank.

Again, thank for all the quick responses.

happy Flying!

WHOA! All bets are off. The front of the tank will fit the SS crankcase just as the SS backplate does. The SS backplate WILL NOT fit the back of the tank.

If I understand you correctly, you either want to sandwich the tank between the SS crankcase and backplate or use the tank as an external tank. In either case, it's a no-go. I would suggest you either use an external tank on the unmodified SS or get yourself a BW backplate.

Thanks gcb

I was afraid of that. I'm off to the LHS today, so I will see if the have a backplate or not. If not, then it's a tank I will put in.

Thanks again!

Many of us on the forum have made tanks from 35mm Fuji film cans or wedding bubble bottles. They're cheap, easy to make, functional and generally lighter than commercial tanks. Here's one link, but there are several threads on construction of tanks on this forum.

Since Cox mixed and matched parts so much, I think you can fit any tank backplate to your vented tank (Babe Bee, BW, Texaco, Golden Bee, etc.).
