nOOB here again,

I agree with the above and I also add that it has to do with what Level at which you want to experience the hobby. My son and I are content with what the low level stuff can do - its fine for us. We don't gripe at our models and say 'wish they could do more'. Usually its 'whoa! didn't think it could do THAT!'.

Its all good fun and don't think we will be tinkering on any 1500 dollar rigs anytime soon. We're just going to try to avoid major damage and get as much fun as we can out of it.

Side note - we went to the LHS and the guy said we don't need new brakes. He showed how to adjust them for harder bite, and explained that's whats needed after they break in. Doh! nOOB learns something new...

Don't get me wrong I'm not bashing my old ebay special or my XTM. They taught me how to turn a wrench and improvise. Which have found out Improvising is a very important skill. Those buggy's got me hooked on Rc'ing. They also lead me to realize what a quality buggy is really like. What it feels like to have a buggy the corners like it's on rails. When you start out at the bottom theres no where to go but up. How do you know when you got a buggy that corners good and jumps good. If you have nothing to compare it to. Guys kill me with the AE, Mugen, Xray, LOSI and Kyosho argument. Those 5 buggys are elites in there class and theres probally not much diffence in them. 1 may corner better, 1 may be more durable, 1 may jump better and 1 may have more precision parts. None have it all it comes down to what feels good to you. All I know is if it wasn't for my ebay special and my XTM. I would not have been smiling ear to ear when I got my LOSI. I woulda had know idea what a good buggy was. How to take care of it. NO NOOB SHOULD START WITH A ELITE BUGGY. I know how important it is to take care of my buggy and engine because of my previous mistakes. Could not imagine having bought my RB engine and treated it like I did my 1st engine. Who never saw a drop of after run and were always put away with gas in the tank. Who rarely got there filters cleaned. My wife says she gonna mount a steering wheel on her A$$ so I will treat her a good as I do my LOSI. Pour out a lil liquor for those cheap learning curve buggy's. That take alot of abuse wind up in a drawer or box in parts. However teach you all the DON'T DO's of RC'ing.

That is one of the best explanations I have heard in a while! Well said.

Very nice vlad, standing ovation buddy!!! No one could have said it better, this is the same way I got into RC/ing.

Love IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! awesome comment about the wife, hey don't forget the afterun oil first though!!!

As far as cheap machines go, some of us want to ease in slowly, or some of us took the wrong dang major in college. ( don't let your kids major in a human service majors) Low money unless you go the 6 or 8 year route, Masters or Doctorate. I went the BS route and I know guys who have not finished high school that do better then me.

But back to the cheaper buggies & truggies, yeah a lack of funds, keeps u away from top of the line. But like anything you can still have fun so why not. Cheap can still be good.

I think they really do not know any better. When I started, I bought one an RC10, and it was awesome. Then I decided to try 1/8 scale buggies, and I bought one of those old Ultra GT's, or LX GT I think mine was, the one with the old 6MM axles that would bend everytime you sneezed, or the fuel would bust. I really thought 1/8 scale buggies were a joke cause of that piece of garbage. My lap times were faster with my RC10! But after I went to some more popular tracks and saw guys running Kyoshos, and Mugens, I knew I had wasted my money. At the time Ofna had just came out with their Hyper7, and I thought I'd give it a try. And WOW! I now could turn much faster lap times than with my RC10! I've actually still got my first Hyper, and have had several buggies since, but I keep going back to my old Hypers.

So I'd say get something good right off the bat, if you know what you want.

I quess JUNK is in the eye of the beholder. Personally, running in regionals with the JUNK i have I am more than competative. The JUNK i run is a himoto RXB-1 pro roller, with a go tech .21 5port, nomadio radio system etc. To be honest the hypers and mugens are barly competion for my JUNK. What most folks do not understand is that hyundai as an example is a JUNK car. However they offer the best warrenty on the planet. How can they compete against the big three. Ill tell you, they are not building the JUNK that you think they are. Guys, you might want to take a second look. In europe these JUNK buggies are making alot of waves.

So to all you NEWBs out there, check them out, set them up right, and have a blast. Do not let these fanboys sway your decision.

Yeah, exactly right! I may decide I don't even like buggies as much as I thought. I may run away completely and stay with airplanes abd helis. I am having a blast with my Hangar 9 F-22 Raptor, with its Evo .52 engine its a handfull!! I also love blazing around in my TREX 450 SE v2. And I just fixed up a Mini Edge 540 and it needs some stick time!

So if I change direction, its easy in, easy out with these JUNK RTR models. I am sure some nOOBs (not me!) will not follow directions and f*ck something up - better do that on a JUNK model, right?

I dunno, call me a nOOB but I really have a hard time calling this Protos JUNK. All its parts are thick. The thing looks over designed, but is not a fat cow either at 6.2 pounds.

I also read the Axial .28 engine it comes with is respectable. Can it really be JUNK?

But here I am, nOOB and all, and I think I screwed up a bit. I wanted to run the thing, so I took it to a secluded parking lot, with lots of neat sand piles strewn about. After a fun quart, I see my front tires are toast, and back ones at half-life.

Being stubborn and all, I splurged on some street tires, hoping these will last longer. But the LHS guy sold me a set of wheels with that, and it was about $58 out the door.

Ideally, I'll find a nice off road area for my son and I to blast around in, but till then, I may hit this sandy parking lot a couple more times. I hope these street tires don't wear so fast out there!

Those "elite" buggies are probably just having setup changes. Either that, or the maintenance that should be being done to ANY buggy to make it last longer and be more reliable.

I'm not talking about every lower-cost buggy owner, just the ones who don't know better and think that their buggy is just as good as something more expensive because they seem to think their buggies are just as good or even better because they don't think they have to do the maintenance that the more expensive buggies need when the truth is that ALL buggies need regular maintenance. Wow, that was the worst run-on sentence I've done in a long time.

people say OFNA is junk, i just got a ravager, and its very durable, comes with many racing features, and jumps perfectly flat.
the build quality on these are just as good as anyother within a few hundred dollars of its price, design is nice, plastics are well shaped and well made, the engine is touchy but punchey.

im going to start racing at a track soon, i have all the nessisary parts installed, like better servos, a 2pl radio, jp2 pipe, panther tires, and jammin shocks.

little baffled as how im going to start it as the bump box runs on a 12V car battery.

Protos is a great RTR. I had one and a Robitronic Mantis and were great. The axial is one of the best motors to come on a RTR. You made a good choice.
