how do i tell if the clutch springs are borke on the avalanche. i removed the clutch bell but none of the shoes seem to be loose as if there is a broken spring. when i remove the clutch bell should it just slide right off or should it be snug/tight. i just want to make sure i am doing everything correctly. i am still a noob at all this???

The clutch bell should just slide off unless the inside or outside bearings are shot and the inside bearing race is stuck on the pilot shaft. On the 1/8th scale vehciels they typically use a three shoe clutch system with each shoe being held on by it's own spring. Normally you'll know as soon as you take off the clutch bell if the shoes are bad. Most time the shoes will wear out and wear down the spring end and the spring looses tension and starts to rub early. It's always a good idea when you replace that style clutch shoe to replace the springs also. Another good idea is to upgrade the shoes to aluminum. The aluminum shoes don't wear as fast as the nylon or teflon shoes do and there resistant to the heat from the engine, which can have an effect on the nylon and teflon shoes speeding up there wear.

well it took some pressure to pull of the clutch bell and when i pulled it off the shoes dont look like they are out of place at all. when i turn the flywheel the piston goes up and down fine. the clutch bell does not spin freely at all. i made a post about 2 weeks ago about my avalanche clutch blowing and everyone who answered said it was most likely the clutch from what i told them. what would be a tell tale sign that the shoe or spring is broke. none of them seem looser than the other. if anyone has a picture of a bad clutch please send me one. when i put the engine in place the truck would not move forward or back more than an inch or so becuase the clutch and flywheel were stuck, but when i took the engine off the tire spun ffine telling me there is nothing wrong with the diffs. what else could be broke that would cause the clutch bell not to spin freely. i really need help with this one. i am going to order new shoes and springs and change them but if you think it is something else besides the clutch please let me know.

It really just sounds like the clutch spring/s are bad. that or for some reason your clutch bell was stuck.

well i dont think it is the clutch bell because even when i take off the screw holding the clutch bell in the bell still would not spin freely so i am going to change the clutch shoes and springs and than repost if i have anymore problems. if anyone has any other thoughts on what would cause the clutch bell to not spin freely please let me know. the flywheel spun just fine and crankshaft still moved just fine so nothing else seems to be stuck at all. once my parts arrive i will be able to change stuff and see what happens

Same thing happened to my bro's avalanche.......stiff to take off the bell, truck only rolled a bit then locked up. when I got the bell of I realized one bearings was really stiff and the other was completely siezed and wouldn't turn on the shaft either. So I Put some oil on it, forced it to turn and took it off with vice-grips. while im waiting for new bearing to come in I lubed up the old ones and put it back together.....oddly enough they turn smoothly, and I ran it twice with no problems.

The solution is to replace the bearings, they are siezed up. The clutch springs on 1/8th scales very rarely are the cause of the stalling problem you get from a 1/10th scale that has a broken clutch shoe spring. Replace the bearigns, that's all you need to do.

i dont think its the bearings because the flywheel still spins like it always did. the clutch bell doesnt move at all and it used to just fine when it was on. well i am going to change the shoes to aluminum ones and change springs. if i have the same problem than i know it is the bearings.

thanks

hes talking about the bearing on the clutch bell, not on the engine.

so does anyone think it could still be the bearings if the flywheel spins just fine. i am still waiting for the parts and tools to change the clutch shoes but if anyone still thinks it might be the bearings please let me know. i wish there was a lhs near me that stocked redcat. that is the only bad thing about this truck is the wait for the parts if something breaks otherwise i absolutely love my avalanche. i am thinking about a buggy next just not sure if i am going to go nitro of electric/brushless. will make my decision sometime before christmas.
