Well heres another 1/2 cents worth.
The concensus at our field is that the saito manual should definitely recommend getting her lit anyway possible (even 3-1/2 to 4 turns) with a wired igniter so amps can be increased if necessary (on the panel)
and a very freshly charged battery so the starter has plenty of power (our crossed batteries in series is a real kicker). Once she's running you want to get the throttle full open and then richen as much as possible to get to 4,000 rpm without killing it in a flood. if igniter needs to stay on the whole time great. consecutive run-ins can reduce the richness a bit and increase rpm's as per (Hobbsy's?) method.
then the fine tuning is critical as recommended by the wise sage above.
The OS method of pinching the fuel line every other 5 seconds to increase rpm briefly and then let it drop is another way to help seat the piston with the cyl. but most of the saito owners I know seem to just get them running rich and leave them under the tree for the full tank (4-5 tanks).
I resume run ins tomorrow (2 more) and should be good. Wll let all know how my fine tuning goes.
Many thanks again.
DB

Dave, you DO NOT want the throttle fully open for the 10 minute 4,000 rpm run, the instructions specifically say 1/4 to 1/3rd open. At full throttle and richened down to 4,000 rpm the engine runs cold as a stone and no break in happens. The engine needs to be somewhere near normal operating temperature to get the break in clearances correct.

I have 6 Saitos now. None of which could I get to turn less than 4K at WOT. No matter how rich they would turn up more than that. Plus I break in on the plane. It would shake some planes apart to try and run it that rich.

OK, I'll do the final break-ins as per HOBBSY's method.
I'll just have to do it early in the morning before the old hens get to the field, (Ha Ha).
Really do appreciate all the help you guys have offered.
I'm reasonably sure that all will go well and that this engine is going to be a great performer.
Having first hand experience is always a bit better than an instuction manual.

What is a good prop for the 180 pulling a 13 pound airplane?

Thanks,
Mike

APC, MenzS or Mejzlik 17x6-8 or 18x6 are all good ones. I like this engine to turn 8500-9500rpm on the ground for the best aerobatic and 3D performance. Torque is high so a larger prop at lower rpm can be used for scale look on a large slow plane.

Thank you for the reply, I have an 18x6 on it now and it will not even come close to hovering my plane. I am thinking of switching it to an 17x6 to see what kind of luck I'll have. I am not sure if I totally believe that this engine will hover a 13 3/8 pound plane at just under half. Maybe a 10 to 11 pound plane.

Mike, No way it hovers a 13lbs plane at 1/2 throttle. My 1.80 will hover a QQ yak at 1/2 throttle. It's less than 10 lbs.

I have a APC 17X8. I have tried a APC 18x6W, APC17x6,and a Zinger Pro 18x6. So far the 17x8 is the best. I just bought a Top Flight Power Point 18x6. It's mounted but I have not ran the engine. I hate to try and get it set when it's 100 degrees. It's going to be hot for the next few weeks so I may wait. Someone else here on RCU suggested a MA 18x6. I may try it but I am hoping the TF is going to work. I have a bunch props that don't work already.

I have an APC 17x8 ready to go on, I am running a Zinger Pro 18x6 now but I am not extremely impressed. The only thing I like about it is the breaking action it creates on down lines. I plan on putting the 17x8 on it tomorrow. Thanks for the information and let me know how the 18x6 MA works.

I did not have any luck with the Zinger Pro. It just loaded my engine up to much. I did move it over to a ST 3250. It's a great prop for that. I will let you know as soon as I run the TF PP.

Mike I ran it this AM with the TF Power Point 18x6. It tuned out at 8,100. This is 300 below peak. IT transfers really will with this prop. I will try and put a flight or two on it later. So far so good,we'll see how it is in the air.

Let me know how the TF 18X6 works Dave. I have just put a 180 on my Goldberg Sukhoi and I have a PowerPoint 18X6 on it. I've flown the plane with my G26 on it but this Saito is over a pound lighter so it should fly much better. The G26 would hover the plane at about 3/4 throttle and I am hoping this Saito has just a bit more grunt. It now weighs just over 10 lbs with the Saito 180 and I am hoping for a much nicer hover.
