Move the trim tabs closer to the strut to improve high-speed handling.
When using a "bullet" prop nut, add a slice of fuel ine between the prop and nut as it will work like a lock washer.
Replace the bottom nut and bolt of the rudder stand-off bracket and replace them with a nylon bolt and nut to work as a shear pin in case of contact with something hard.

Ron,

I can never run full throttle - as soon as it starts screaming, it does this little wiggle-dance, side-to-side. It's sort of like it would be rocking back and forth on the keel if you had it on the workbench. I believe that's exactly what's happening in the water - it's coming out so far that just the very back of the keel is touching the water, and any disturbance causes a severe side-to-side wobble. It is so bad that the boat gets out of control very quickly. My wife caught it on video a few weeks ago. The boat barrel-rolled, but somehow I was able to save it. http://youtube.com/watch?v=nW84J3d5szA

Will your mod, of moving the trim tabs, help this situation? I've tried trimming it out, but I can only make it better - I can't get rid of the problem completely. I'm also wondering if changing the angle/height of the prop will help - and if so, which way should I adjust it? Right now, the boat is stock, and I'm fairly new to gas boats... I used to run electric boats many years ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
ron

Usually they'll barrel-roll to the right, yours went to the left like the rudder or hull hit something underwater.
After reading a full-sized boat mag they gave several solutions for chine-walking, the CG too far forward, the strut at the wrong location, too big of a prop and the trim tabs being to far out.. In your video the boat wasn't realy going fast enough to where it could have gotten to the point where the boat was so high out of the water where the boat couldn't use the trim tabs.

do you have some turn fins on it?

Maybe turn fins may solve the problem.

I'm not saying your boat wasn't fast but at the speed you were going (pretty decent) there should not be any problems. either something is missing/ot wrong in the setup.

Dan.

I sincerely appreciate the responses! I’d really like to get this problems solved, so I can run full throttle without fear of having to rescue a drowned boat. Once is enough…

If you watch the slowed-down portions of the video, you’ll see it first rocks to the right, then over-corrects to the left… and over it goes! It’s a very fast wobble. It’s not usually that quick. I normally get some time to get off the throttle after it starts wobbling. I’m 99% sure there was nothing under water that caused it. The pond (lake, if you live in Florida) is pretty deep, and the only weeds are near the edges. I had to rescue it once in my rubber raft. I looked, but I didn’t see anything unusual out in the “deep water”.

In all fairness, I’ve made a couple mods since that video. I started playing with the trim tabs, as I indicated earlier. That helped a little… but didn’t solve the problem. The other mod (I read about on this forum) was to bend the turn fins so that they are perpendicular to the bottom of the flat part of the hull. In other words, they now bend outward at a 30 degree angle (give or take). I noticed an immediate difference when taking turns. It used to want to roll over on sharp turns. Now, it carves.

But, I still have the silly wobble issue – or chine-walking, as you called it. I’m working my way down your list… the CG should be fine, at least, it’s stock. The strut, prop, and trim tabs are all stock as well. If you’re thinking the boat wasn’t far enough out of the water to utilize the trim tabs… can I assume that’s where I should be looking? They were at their stock setting when the video was made. Last week I tweaked them up, and then down, and then somewhere back in the middle. Down-trim pushed the nose down in the water, getting it up on plane quickly, the wobble was worse than previous. Up-trim got the nose up high, but at speed it was all over the place (couldn’t keep it straight). I purposely exaggerated the adjustments – to see what the effects would be. I didn’t really like either way, so I put the trim back to where it was.

I’m thinking of playing with the prop height next…

BTW – I’m sorry to have more-or-less hijacked this thread. Should I start another, out of respect to the original poster?

I just got home from running and a Shockwave 36 showed up. He had pretty much had the same problems as you've had. His got to where it was doing some weird shimmying. A little trim tab adjustment seemed to settle it down.
