I've got a Futaba 6EXsomething and am hooking up my first plane with flaperons. I understand that often flaperons, or flaps, requires elevator mixed in with it as well. How do I do this? Do I use one of the user-set p-mixes and slave elevator to aileron and use the flap switch to activate it? It doesn't say in the manual how to do this.

thanks.

First off, what airplane? If its got full wingspan strip ailerons its ok but if its ailerons out on the wing tips like most warbirds, then its bad news.

Barracuda is correct. Only use flaperons if you have full-span ailerons. Assuming you do, your first step is to activate the flaperon function and make a test flight with no elevator mix. Do this at a generous altitude. You need to know if the nose pitches up or down when you engage the flaps. Once you know this, you can then mix elevator (slave) to your FLAP switch or dial (master). Make sure the elevator moves up or down appropriately. Start small: 5- 10% elevator throw. A little goes a long way here. I currently have this set-up on my Sig Little Extra with a Futaba 6EXA (flap control: dial). Works great!

Thanks guys. It's the Phoenix Super Decathlon, full length ailerons.

So slave my elevator to channel 1 (aileron) and don't worry about channel 6, right?

Actually now this seems like a waste of a mix! Hopefully I won't need more than one other mix

Slave the elevator to channel 6, flapperon. If you slave it to aileron, every turn you make will have ele mixed in. Slave to the flap channel.

It's not about what surface it's slaved to, but to what switch on the radio it is slaved to. You want to slave it to the flap dial, which is channel 6.

Until you try it, no telling which way it'll pitch with flaps. Also, before deciding you'll actually use flapperons regularly, see what flapperons down does to it's aileron response at low speeds. Even with full span ailerons, it can sometimes induce snaps. Try high first! Decathalon's not that hot landing a plane, so you'll probably never really need'em.

With flaps down some planes may change in pitch, others don't. I suggest you practice takeoffs with various degrees of flaps so you became aware of what may happen. A large Stuka at our club landed with flaps and as you point out, "looked cool". A few hours later the same plane took off, but the R/C pilot forgot that he had flaps down. The plane was totaled on take off.

do you have the 2.4 radio? the 72 mgh version is the same. you have to activate flaperons, the right in chanel 1 and the left in chanel 6. I did see it in the manual. it was easy to set up. the trim had to be set also. at the facory trim setting, the flaps wouldnt move. it has to be backed off to make them move.
