What do I need to convert the TMaxx 3.3 trans over to the SMaxx or another 2.5 transmission? What is the opti drive and what does it do? Is it necessary?

Why would you want to convert the 3.3 tranny into a 2.5 tranny? The 3.3 is the upgraded version of the 2.5(also the same as the s-maxx..) So there is no reason to change it over to the down-graded version.

The opti-drive is a peice of insurence that doesn't allow the tranny to shift from forward to reverse will its moving. Its not neccesary and hasn't always worked in my experience. You do not need it to run the truck and it can be taken out. You just have to be careful not to switch it into reverse while driveing.

I'm sorry... I want to put the 3.3 trans INTO a 2.5 truck. I don't think I was clear before. Do I need to change out anything or does it just bolt right in?

As far as I know, the 2.5 and the 3.3 trans is the same, so everything should just "bolt" right into the 2.5 trans case(unless I am totally off on something in which case someone by all means correct me if I am)

Yea matt, You are right. Everything should bolt right up. The diffrence in the 2 transmissons is the gearing, and the opti-drive. There is a wide gear ratio set in the 3.3 trans wich makes it faster. There is only a standard gear ratio in the 2.5 trans. Wich means it has a slower top end. The good thing about having a standard gear ratio is that the truck doesn't jerk forward once it shifts. The wide gear ratio does. This is bad in a small tight track because the truck becomes uncontrolable for that split secound of shifting. These diffrent ratio's can be bought seperatly for like $10. So you don't need to get a whole other trans for it.

The Opti-drive is new in the fact that it is a "fail safe" along with the normal controls of the old 0pti-drive.

Honestly you don't need the 3.3 tranny. If you want the wide gear ratio just pick it up from your local hobby store.

Yes that is all good. But please remember that the New 4908 Tranny will not fit into any other T-maxx due to the chassis being too small on the older T-maxx's. I was able to do it but I had to modify the chassis and driveshafts and motor mount holes.

I cross referenced the part numbers last night and they are all different. It seem (just judging by part numbers) that the 3.3 got a beefier trans. That's mainly what I'm after.... some reliability and strength, although the ability to change gear ratios is also good.
