For normal sport flying, buy the 5% fuel off the shelf (Omega) and go burn it up.

Amen to that! A lot of people over analyze and complicate things to the point where it's not fun anymore. Life's too short to stress about every last detail.

Yep, micro-managing hobbies isn't for me, either.

I don't know anybody that over analizes and stresses over every detail till the fun is gone from his hobby.

Some of us actually enjoy mixing our own fuel and reaping the financial rewards that this offers.

We're not retentive, we simply like to extend our understanding of all aspects of the hobby. I see no difference between mixing your own fuel and designing/building your own model. Some people like RTF and some of us are kit-builders (that applies to fuel as as well as airframes)

I don't disagree. I have mixed my own fuel before with excellent results. I happen to help out with a top fuel dragster occasionally . But he ain't giving up any nitro at the moment.

I'm not saying I'm against mixing my own fuel and I'm certainly not taking a personal jab at anyone. My LHS carries Morgan's Omega and it's only $11.99 for a gallon of 5% - there's no way I'd be able to source the ingredients for home-brewing my own fuel for it to be cost effective so, off the shelf stuff is "good enough".

I certainly understand creating something for the thrill of it, or just because you can... I home brew my own beer, reload my own ammo, do my own auto repair & performance modifications, build my own telescopes, machine my own hobby related parts, not to mention design & scratch build my own RC airplanes... I'm a tinkerer and a creator just like many of us here. It's just that I've seen so many forum posts turn into: "If you're not doing it my way then you're wrong!" and that in itself is just plain wrong.

Jeffie, you got me all wrong... aren't I the one telling you to stop stressing over RPM & props & thrust & fuel & glow plugs etc.... and to "Just fly the darn airplane!"

Yea I feel bad about picking on you. Buuuuudy.

Unfortunately I am the unlucky guy that if I don't stress over each and every detail at least 3 times it will rear up and bite me in the ,,,rear.
That is why I ain't a mechanic any more. I couldn't throw somehting together and not have it come back on me so it took me too long to fix anything and I didn't make a living.

"My LHS carries Morgan's Omega and it's only $11.99 for a gallon of 5% "

Is that the current price or the price it was the last time you bought fuel back in the '80s? My not so LHS charges $20/gal. for the same fuel!

That's the current, as of about a month ago price.. it's also a whopping $14.99 for 15% too!

Actually the owner prides himself on being able to offer fuel that cheap, while one of the other shops in the area brags that he can charge $20 a gallon and people buy it anyway... guess which shop I'll go out of my way for?

I started this thread to find out if adding a couple ounces of castor to a gallon
of my favorite fuel would benefit my engines. I didn't realize it touch off this
much debate. Luckily, our LHS owner makes the drive to Wildcat fuels in
Lexington to keep us suplied, and kept the price about the same.

skyraider71, it's best to do what makes you feel confident, not necessarily what other people recommend. When I was buying 18% oil 50 castor/50 synth fuel I added three or four ounces of castor to a new gallon. Now, I buy Powermaster GMA 22% oil and burn it straight out of the can. It makes me feel like I'm taking good care of my older non-ringed, lapped piston engines, so, I'm happy. It doesn't matter to me if I'm using more oil than I need to.

The NHRA has reduced the quater mile to a thousand feet to save fuel.

I like to pick people's brains before trying something new. perhaps I should
just try adding a little castor and see, what could it hurt?
BTW, Jeffie, next time you pop into Sig, can you put a bug in their ear to
re-release the Doubler II? ........Thanx,.......Daniel.
