Since I started in the hobby(nine years ago), I've heard of folks adding
extra oil to their fuel. I have never done this, I have always run Wildcat
15%nitro-18%oil with good results, and never added anything to it.
What are everyones' thoughts on this.

I think most glow engines will run fine with 18% oil. No reason to add any.

A lot depends on how the fuel was made. If a manufacturer uses weight instead of volume to calculate the percentages you will be light on both nitro and oil from what I have been told. Methanol weighs the least and it is the cheapest of the 3 ingredients so it would end up being the highest percentage. I have had no bad experiences adding oil only ones from not enough oil. 1/2A engines are very sensitive to this.

that subject came out at the field today... one guy says he add 1 oz of castor commonly sold at supermarkets, to a gallon of fully synthetic to make it a blend

When I was using Powermaster Sport with 18% castor/synth I added 4ozs of castor to a new gallon. Now, I'm using Powermaster GMA with 22% castor/synth and I don't add any extra castor. I should add that I run a lot of old engines, too, and that's why I want the extra oil.

There are guys around here now running their engines (including helis and ducted fans) with no problems at all on 8% oil.

If you use the right type of oil that's all you need.

Actually, they like fossil fuel.

You must have heard of my using E85 mixed 50/50 to save money on glow fuel . 15% gasoline, actually it would only be about 5% after blending. Depends on how much castor I want to blend in for my hungry little dinasaurs.

XJet - what kind of oil do you use in an 8% mix?

You'll get as many different answers as there are replies to your question. If you find your engines are running well on what you're using, stick with it. Remember the old saying, "if it works, don't fix it"

The majority of my engines' manuals state that fuel with at least 18% oil is required. Unless your engines require more than 18% I do not see any reason to add any.

As far as mixing by weight causing the oil or nitro to be low, it depends on how it is done. If you determine how much a specific volume of each ingredient weighs, you can use those weights to make fuel that does not short any of the ingredients.

If. However If they only use 18% by weight of the total you will get shorted.

Byrons is the sole US fuel company that I am aware of that blends by weight. How, specificlly, do they determine these weights? I truly have no idea.

Hi Rider, 18% oil its ok on most modern engines, like ABN/ABC and in some racing motors. But in steel/iron piston and cylinder and in other "Hotter" aplications (ducted fan, helicopters, and others...) most people prefer to add some more oil to ensure a longer engine life, and better overall setting, and also added by people that use plain bearing motors, that require a litle bit more oil. Also, if you check at some of the OS Max engines owners manual for example, you´ll notice that 18% is the minimum indicated by this brand in various of their 2 stroke engines... (They also warn to use this percentual by volume and not by weight as some brands prefer to use...)
cheers

I think it's time we get the straight skinny from the manufacturers. Sure they can claim 18% oil but if it is calculated by total weight then it is going to be low. I only trust SIG since I have met them and know how they blend. All my engines love SIG fuel. I have switched to using all castor fuel just because I can. My engines get a LOT of maintenance anyway cause I am an engine oriented guy. I challenge anyone to tell me all castor fuel is hurting my engines!!
