I have a Gator R/C 1.20 Soft 'n safe mount that needs to be redrilled. I am trying to retrofit my Laser with a new YS FZ120 (it used to have an FZ91), but realized after drilling and tapping that I'm going to have to move the firewall 1/2" back to get everything to fit right. Moving the firewall back isn't a problem other than being a pain, but I'll have to redrill the mount to get the engine to fit properly on the mount (it's currently too close to the mount backplate for my comfort).

Should I worry about the holes that are already in the beams? In other words, will they appreciable weaken the mount? The holes are 8-32 and the beams are 5/8" wide, so there seems to be plenty of meat left to the beams. I thought about filling the holes with JBWeld or JBWelding an 8-32 bolt in the hole and cutting it flush with the beam, but if it's not necessary I'd just as soon not do it...

The mount should be just fine. As long as the holes are in good shape, not egged out, you won't weaken it any more than the original holes did. Most metal mounts are many times stronger than necessary as long as they aren't cracked or distorted when the firewall or engine bolts are tightened.

Those were my thoughts exactly...I was looking it over again a few minutes ago and decided it was plenty strong despite the holes. The forward holes will be straddled by the engine flanges, so only the rearward holes are of any concern (and it has some very beefy gussets in that area...here's a link for the mount):

All in all, a nice mount...I just hate it that I messed up the first time. I have to move the firewall back 1/2" to get everything to fit properly...I'll have to take a bandsaw to the fuse tomorrow (that'll a scary moment... )
