Hello Everyone. I want to make the jump from glow to gas. I dont have any clubs around here for any advice. I want to buy the 110" ag wagon from Austars. They have tested it with a 50 cc engine from 3mm. I know nothing about gas. What new equipment will I need? What are some good engine choices? I mean brands. Any ifno would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

cessna 188, As AirWizard noted there are not many changes in equiptment when changing from gow to gas . The biggest changes will be in the fuel system
plumming . There is no need to pressurize the fuel tank . The carb pumps the fuel from the tank . Most gas engines now have electronic ignition that does require
an additional battery, and the learning curve of tuning gas vs tuning glow .
Most frequently when one goes from glow to gas the size of the gas plane is usualy much larger than the glow plane(s) previously flown.
This requires a shift in thought when it comes to the quality of the equiptment being used . You will need to plan for stronger servos , back up battery systems
, the size of linkages (no more 2-56 linkages or plastic clevises) , heavier guage servo wire extensions , etc.....
There is a tremendous amount of info on RCU for each of the above mentioned areas. Please research and ask questions as you go ...
Enjoy the change to gas , its worth it !!!!

In addition to the great advice from Air Wizard and CK1 here are a few things to remember:

All fuel lines and tank stoppers must be gas compatible such as Tygon tubing or Hayes black seamless neoprene tubing and Dubro brown coloured gas tank stoppers.

Always filter the gas from your fuel container and use a felt filtered tank clunk as gasser carbs are extremely finiky about running on CLEAN gas.

Never have any metal to metal connections on your throttle linkages ... nyrod or fiber rods with nylon snap links at the carb end work best.

Keep the engine ignition module, it's battery and switch well away (12" if possible) from your onboard radio system e.g Rx, switch, battery and servos.

ALWAYS always balance your prop.

Range check your model with engine both off and running at idle and WOT for interference, and the difference in distance with the engine off and running should not be more that 15%.

Read everything you can lay your hands on about gas engines as they and tuning them are worlds apart from their glow counterparts, and ask all the questions you want.

Karol

Thanks alot fellows. That was more than enough info. at this time. I'm sure I'll be begging for more help as the time comes. I just hope I can fly this thing. It will be a big jump in size and money. I have been flying off and on for 19 years with almost all being tail dragger time. If I did buy a tricycle gear plane, that was the first thing to go. I have always felt more comfortable with tail wheels. I love pumping rudder!!!!!!!!!

In addition to all that is said above, look at the A123 battery technology for your gas plane. Like you I just got my first 50cc gas plane and power it with a DA-50 and love it. You need a separate battery pack for the ignition, although some people run the ignition and RX off the same battery but they take what I believe is an unnecessary risk. In addition to the ignition battery pack, I have two separate battery packs for the RX and this is just redundancy so that you have a back-up should one pack fail. When you put $2,500+ into a gas plane, buying an extra battery pack should be you're last concern. The A123 technology is great. You get a lot of flight time out of a charge, they are safe to charge, hold a constant 6.6 voltage, and best of all, they can be charged and re-charged in just 5-10 minutes. When I fly my 50cc, I usually get at least 6 flights with the A123 before re-charge and they could easily go up to 10 flights. If you want to learn more about A123 batteries, look at www.sincityjets.com
