I have a little over 10 tanks through my new sts 30. I sealed the backplate and carb when I got it. I also put some green slime on the hsn and teflon tape on the lsn. It appears to still be running rich(lots of smoke and bogging/power not so impressive) but the temps will easily get up to 240-250 before the end of the tank. I have read that this engine requires a long break-in but should it still be running like this? It is in a thunder tiger st-1 with stock clutch shoes and the tt efra 2035 pipe.

Well, it is hard to say now. STS used to make their engines with a decent amount of production consistency, but now, they really laxed thei manufacturing standards and it is ahrd to tell if you are going to get a great engine or a lemon.

For you case, lean it more. Do not be shy about it reaching 275degrees F. That is the temp I found that most big blocks are comfortable at.

Your engine is still a little fresh from the initial break-in, so still be [atient with it during start up. Alwasy preheat it as close as possible to 200degrees F before starting, continue to tune, lean/richen, retune, etc. You engine will not be fully broken in until at least a quart to half gallon (maybe a little more). For now, of course, you engine will still be a little on the rich side. Once you know for sure that you engine is fully boken in, then lean for good performance. Just be pateint with it for now.

Yeah, i have the same issue here runnign d30m. I'm using 25% nitro (tornado fuel). I do see tremendous amount of smoke coming out and yet the temp show 270-280. I'm so worried whether i damage the engine in the long run , and yes, I do sealed the carb and backplate. Anyone can help? Is it norm for big block engine to run at high temp? Thanks..

My STS 30 runs at 280-310 and still very rich. next time I get it out (which will probably be a while) I'm going to lean it a tad and just run it.

ah I was afraid of this when I bought the engine. I was hoping sts had fixed their qc issues but it sounds like it has gone the other way. Can't do much but keep running it. I'll let you know if it wakes up after a gallon or so. Thanks..

Seal the carb & backplate, and run it. Remember, friction (pinch) causes heat too, so when the engine is fully broken in, the temps should go down. As long as it's sealed up and not BURNING up and producing good smoke, it should be okay I would think.

Whenever I tell people that my XTM 24.7 likes to run 280-300 degrees, they think I'm crazy. I've talked to another guy who runs his "other" engines in the 230-250 range and they say that his 24.7 runs close to 300 degrees too, and continues to run up there. Some engines are like that, and should probably not be avoided or condemned because they run hotter than other engines. It only matters how long they last and how well they run, right?

True that is all that matters and that you have fun with whatever you have. It isn't running so great yet but it's really not horrible either. Performance is about the same as stock now so it will be slightly faster at the very least after it is broken in. I haven't lost all hope yet. I have sealed it but should I do anything else? New bearings or clutch? I know that the clutch springs are weaker now because I couldn't get them to pop off of the old engine and I bent them a little too far.
