I with you. Setting it all up just to see how it looks is half the fun

Final wing radio installtion complete. Rudder left & right to throttle banks right & left mix active in flight mode 2 programmed for water steering. I have GWS gyro on it's way for the rudder. 30 degrees of flaps as well. Lots of wiring for such a small wing.

Scott: Looks like you're in the copper business. Which radio are you using, and was it very difficult to program the diff steering?

lol, if took a bit of thought be not really difficult . . . I have a JR PCM10X heli handset.

Mix 1 Throttle to AUX2 100% (this is so the engines operate as one but are on left and right banks) AUX2 switch is dissabled (mix enabled in all flight modes)
Mix 2 Rudder to Throttle 65% on left rudder 0% on right rudder (Only active in flight mode 2)
Mix 3 Rudder to Aux2 65 on right rudder 0% on left rudder (Only active in flight mode 2)

Thats it!

Engine test / run it at the weekend, I think Im about 15 hours away from completion now . . .

Scott.

Thanks, Scott. That sounds very similar to the way the Futabas work.

Best of luck on the maiden.

BTW: can you take a quick look at your Mars plans and tell me the outside diameter of the cowls? (I'm going to look for some in FG, and I also want to assess the possibility of glow engines. I always like to do cost and weight comparisons before deciding on electric or glow.)

Bob,

Maiden will not be a month or so, but need to get those engines as perfect as I can.

Will do on the cowls etc, may not be untill the weekend I fear . . . btw, I dont really see glow being an option on the Ivan Mars plans if im honest - he really does design and build in sparse manner, your see what I mean if you get the plan . . . When I build mine It will be electric (just dont tell anybody )

Hows the Cat?

Scott.

Scott:

I'm thinking you're right about the glow option, based on looking at Ivan's when it was in bones. Looks kinda light. However, the amount of rigidity that 100% 1/32 inch balsa sheeting adds is amazing, considering that it weighs almost nothing.

I actually did a little work on the Cat last night- made a nice cradle for it out of pink foam. One of the things that has slowed me down is that I wasn't happy with my scheme for connecting all the electricals during the wing mounting process at the lake. I sat down yesterday and re-routed some things to make it easier, including a hatch on top of the wing for doing the final battery plug in before flight. The wind has been so goofy here that there isn't much opportunity to fly, so I should start gluing some more balsa today.

Indeed, could not be doing with another drab militray model . . . yes it will have windows for the passengers and ample room to pick up the Air Mail

Hope fully if I can get a resemblance to this I will be happy.

Well, I think she's looking pretty nice. Do you ever imagine how commercial aviation might have developed had WWII not been fought, and all those runways never been built that didn't exist prior to the war? Maybe we'd be flying around in turbine powered flying boats and landing in the various lakes and lochs. Sure would be a lot more fun.

Finished to the point where it needs to be flown before before any more detail is added . . . All radioed with the inclusion of a gyro on the rudder, ballanced and ready to go.

Hi Scott

It's looking very good and the engines sound very sweet and balanced.
Please do me a favour and cut off the excess arms on the servos and paint them white, it'll look a whole lot better

Cheers
George

PS it would have looked better with motors

G,

If it flies right I'll finish it off nicely . . .The fuselage sides of the Martin Mars are done now!

Oh, do you know where I can get a pair of brushed 40 > 50 amp lipo compatable ESC from?

Scott.

After flying the sunderland on IC sucessfully I have decided to convert it to electric, although it did fly quite well it felt like it needed to be flown at full throttle and I was not comfortable with doing that, keeping 2 engines lit can be tough but 4 small ones was problematic, but still fun.

In hind sight the need for it to be flown flat may have not been entirely correct as I failed to take into consideration the drag factor and the fact that it may have reached it's maximum airspeed at maybe 3/4 throttle, but by the time I had contemplated this I have removed the engines / tanks and servos and cut the firewalls out. :-(

I managed to pick up a job lot of 4 x 400watt Turnigy C3656-1300 brushless outrunners and matching 40amp ESC for £90 (Appologies G, funds are tight!) that although slightly overpowered as the plan calls for 4 x 200W seemed value for money. The motors ideally suit 9x6 or 10x5 but I have opted to try 4 x 8x6 APCE to start with.

The Watts meter suggested @ 11000 rpm the current draw was 29amps / 310watts so with an UAW of 8.5Lb gives me reasonable power to weight, if all is good I may try 4 x 8x4 APCE props in the futrure to bring down the current draw.

I was not concerned about the extra weight of the motors and the wiring as they are all far foward of the CG where the weight is required due the scale short front end. Having remade and mounted the original formers and engine firewalls I cut into the LE of the wing to ensure the wire run to the ESC's although still to long IMO are as short as possible, the wire guage is 55amps for 5 Minutes so hopefully should go in my favour with regards the long wire rule. TN suggested ESC's in the Nacles were ok on his so it's good enough for me, also putting them in the fuselage will restrict the cooling to much I feel, Im still concerned about cool of the Lipo's though.

The lipos were from a friend and @ £60 for both packs (Hyperion 3S 3700mAh 20c) seems a good price as I knew the history of them and they were light for the capacity, mouting them @ the correct depth in the nose took some concideration, the end result was a tray that could be slid in to the correct possition with the lipos mounted.

The ballance is correct with a standard 4 cell RX pack in the nose and I have adjustment as the Lipos position can be adjusted on the mount. Loads of pictures as the ballance over battery mounting for me was problomatic as was the motor and wiring

configuration, so they may inspire other builders! The inner motors are powers as a pair from one battery as are the outers, however the throttle controls are on 2 separate RX channels on a mix to give water / ground handling, also I am considering putting the gyro on the rudder back in as I have heard of a fellow sunderland builder loose his electric model in crash due to a motor / esc failure.

I'm going to fly it first before tidying it up I think, wish me luck! :-)

Scotty

The 8x6 are too much for the 1300kv version plus the current will stress the LiPo's.
You have so much power there you will be able to prop hang it

The 8x4 are a much better choice plus they will stress the LiPo's less.

Out of interest what is the weight of the model in IC form and electric form ?

Cheers
G
