A friend of mine is building a Great Planes Sportster 40 Biplane. He is nearing completion and is looking for some advice.

Is the Saito62A a good choice for this plane?

I think he would need more power. He may also need some nose weight to balance it. When it is time to fly it. Make sure you get a good long roll out. If you pull it up to sone it will tip stall.

Thanks for the help David.
The manual suggests a 35 to 45 2C so I was hoping to get away with a smaller engine. We have a Saito .82 which may have to do the trick.

I remember flying one of these in the early 90's.
I had a O.S. max 60 four stroke in it and really thought it was great on power.
But this was well before the 3D power craze came around so nowdays Im sure most
would say it was underpowered. I really liked this plane a lot and have often thought of building another.
I still have the plans from the kit I built. I dont recall having to use any nose weight but the fourstrokes
were much heavier back then. Im sure your friend will really like the way it flies.
I covered mine just like the box with red coverite and yellow monokote sunbursts.
I really like the way monokote goes onto a fabric surface with no bubbles and the fabric covering
just looks good on a bipe.

Good Luck,

Tim

My friend is no 3D flyer, he just likes lazy sunday sport flying. I will let him know to go for the .62 4C as that was what his heart was set on originally.
The plane is looking great already, I think he is going to cover it like the box too.
Will post pics when it is done.

I flew mine back in the day with a OS .40 2-stroke and the plane had plenty of power, the roll rate was great and the vertical performance was good. I did remove the rounded wing tips and squared off the tail surfaces and increased the rudder and elevator area on mine. Was a great flying plane but I lost it on a flame out just after take-off. I put at leat 200 flights on that plane.
