Hello,
Need some advice, I'm looking at building a Lanier 25% Extra300s and am wondering what size gasser should I put in it. I am looking at both the 40cc and 50cc classes from either ZDZ, BME, DA, and 3w. I know the brand thing is like asking do you like Ford or Chevy (don't want to open up a can of worms ), so first I just need some help deciding which size. Here are the stats of the kit:

Wingspan:72"
Fuesklage Length:62"
Weight: 9-12lbs and up
Engine: 2-Stroke Engine Size: .91 - 1.80
4-Stroke Engine Size: 1.20 - 1.84


I'm looking for IMAC aerobatics with the possibility to learn 3D, also, would like good vertical out of a hover. Thanks for the help!

I guess you like hyper-performance. I think you should look at the 1.4 from RCS which is light and powerful. Also consider the 3W24. I would never go with a 50 on an aircraft of this size and weight. You might consider the 40 sportsman from ZDZ which has more than enough power and is a great deal.

25% size planes are for ,well,"120"size engines,not 40-50 cc gas engines that weigh 4lb. 40-50cc gas engines are for 80" planes that weigh around 13-16 lb.
A 40-50 cc gasser on a 120 size 72" plane is nothing more than a "flying brick."

I would take exception to the flying brick comment. I have a 3.2 Brison on a 72" Goldberg Sukoi and I was really surprised how well it flew. I used the 3.2 b/c I had it, a 40cc would be my first choice. I wouldn't recommend the smaller gas engines like the 24-30cc in a aerobatic plane [I'm sure someone will disagree]. A heavy underpowered plane is o/k but work to fly, but a heavy over powered plane is a lot of fun. It is easier to fly now than when I had a 1.08 glow on it and it was 2lb lighter. Now structurally I've still got my fingers crossed when I snap roll it [sure would hate to see the wings come down in two pieces]. Most of the time I am practicing torque rolling and other low g things. Steve

I have had the BME40 BME50 and the Taurus52 on the 120 size H9 CAP. I was able to get the planes below the 14 pound mark. The fly pretty decent, but if the engine dies, you won't FLOAT DOWN.

Take a look at your wing loading--you definitely want it below 30. Figure AT LEAST 4 lbs for a 50cc engine with ignition and battery--in my experience it's nearly impossible in that size aircraft to have that much engine weight and still get the aircraft with a desireable wing loading. Consider going with a 27% size aircraft which has more wing area. I think that is the "break point" where gas really makes sense.

You might consider the FPE 2.4 for your plane. It is the lightest 40cc available and has decent power. It comes in at 3lbs, 4 oz complete with ignition/battery, muffler. Again, check your wing loading.

My wing loading comes in at about 31.5lb. It does sound high but the review in June Model Airplane News about the Great Planes extra 300 ha a loading of 32.2lb. You'd think they were talking about a trainer the way they describe the slow flight. It isn't a floater by any means but around 30lb seems to work fine for me. Steve

I am now finishing a Lanier Extra kit for a friend of mine and he is planning a MVVS 1.60 gas engine for his. We decided that would be the best power/weight trade off for a gas engine in this size of plane. About the same weight as a Satio 180 but not quite the power. If I can get it around 10 or 11 lbs it should make a nice combo.
