If the curved top part of a planes wing gives it lift,How does a 3D plane get lift? when both the top and bottom have the same shape. Would they not cancel each other?

The wing shape is only part of what gives a wing lift. Research Angle of Attack (AOA).

A 3d plane gets its lift from overpowering its weight(thrust to weight ratio). However a symmetrical wing can deliver lift when the elevator is applied. Think of this.................When you go full throttle on a trainer, the plane usually lifts off by itself. Very little elevator input is required for lift. However, in a lets say Extra 300(low wing ), if you go full throttle the plane will stay on the ground until elevator is mixed in. Its not always like this and there are more variables that play important roles (balancing, CG) but thats the jist of it.

Even a flat plate can create lift if it has enough velocity and angle of attack. Do some research on your own and you should be able to find the answer by yourself.

Thanks for the information, did some research on AOA, now I understand.

Actually the wing placement has nothing to do with it, it is the wing profile that matters. You can have a high wing symmetrical airfoil and the same theory applies.

Cut an 8 inch circle from 1/8" cardboard, throw it with aslight upward AOA. The disk will climb till it excedes it's optimum AOA, or till it's airspeed drops till it can no longer create enough lift and it "lands/crashes". Speed and power can over come gravity. That's why PIGS can fly in tornado alley.LOL

Allfat, I was making a remark on shape of the plane. If hes asking about wing deflection then he probably doesnt know what an Extra 300 looks like.

Capo, balance and CG have nothing to do with lift generation. While in a TR, or similar maneuver, it is true that the propeller must generate lift (thrust) capable of holding the weight of the plane, but 3D planes need the lift generated from their wings for most other maneuvers. As was indicated in the first response, the key is AOA. -Cheers

Actually, the Extra (and most other tail draggers) has a positive angle of attack while sitting at rest on the ground. Without changing it's attitude it WILL take off when the speed gets high enough. This is NOT the best way of doing it but it would work. (Best on pavement)
