I need help deciding on new motors for my Villain EX since the stock ones have about had it. I upgraded to a Novak superduty speed control that is capable of two 12 turn 550 size motors and I run it on two 7 cell batteries.
These are what I was looking at:
-23 turn stock Traxxas Titan 550 motors
-12 turn Traxxas Titan 550 motors
-19 turn Trinity Monster MAXX Wild
-12 turn Trinity Monster Big Block 550 motors

I don't want a motor where I have to lathe the commutator every so often or constantly change brushes.
I also would like to know the best and cheapest place for purchasing these motors.

All I know so far is they have to have adjustable timing so the one that runs backwards can be set to zero.
Other then that I am in the same boat need new motors but don't want to buy more stock ones.
The bushing in mine are starting to sound crappy!

you should get this summer issue of radio control boat modeler mag. It has a great artical on the villian hop ups! has traxxas twin brushless motor and two esc in it and props upgrades and speeds over 40mhp!!

I find that my Villain EX is pretty unstable at high speeds the way they come. Trim Tabs and spin fins are a nice add-on, I'm making some right now. Also upgrading to Octura Berylium-Copper props is supposed to yield a nice gain in performance. Water cool it, helps a lot! Bearings is my next move after props, I've already got the water cooling and 16.8v taken care of. I may get crazy and put two Brushless in it just to see what happens!

Yeah I am not really interested in going brushless I just want some better than stock low matinence motors. RC boat modeler put trinity big blocks in it so I know it will work. What I don't know is where to get them, how much they cost, and how long the brushes and commutator last.

I don't have the 12T Titans, but I would assume they would provide much better performance over the 23T stockers and still provide low-maintenance. I haven't touched my Titans in since I bought the boat 3 years ago.

EDIT: I also just read that Traxxas says NO to applications with Dual motors or over 8.4v.....weird????

As far as upgrades I have a novak superduty esc, 7 cell 4200mah batteries, larger pinions, and graupner u-joints.
I was really dissapointed with the graupner U-joints. They are a hair shorter than the stock ones so the outdrives
don't trim up as far but it didn't run good trimmed all the way up anyways. But what upset me was that they have
just as much if not more play in them than the stock ones, which really atribute to the outdrive "slop".

Oh, and I wet-sanded the hull.

Are the 12T Titans 0 timing? because they aren't used in dual setups, only single. Maybe the motors get too hot above 8.4 volts?

Edit: I emailed traxxas and they only partially answered my questions, they said if using the 12T titans in the villian Ex you will gain nothing except excess heat.

I am going to be honest here about this boat in all the reading I have done and out countless hrs on the boat that I have.
Modding this boat is a waste of time.
Just buy a SV-27 and keep this boat for a retriaval boat and the fun one to hand the remote too.
There is just too much against this boat too be modding it up a bunch.
Just my 2 cents
Don't get mad at me anybody

I am not really modding it. My esc fried so I got a better one, now my motors are fried so why not get slightly better ones?
I don't wan't to get outragous, just make improvements as needed.
I totaly would have got the SV-27 instead but it wasn't on the market at that time.

i'd use a pair of these:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXTSG8&P=7

They don't look like much, but they have the best specs of all the 19 turns on tower. (out of the ones that actually give the specs)

What will give you the best performance, motors beside, is this:
http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ose-expropkit
or
http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ose-traxxaspropkit

The copper beryllium props will be better.
