I ordered a hummingbird from Century complete kit with the TX and it should be delivered today by UPS I can't wait! ..( My first heli..)
These are the parts I ordered already to upgrade it.

Aluminum Swash plate assembled kit.
2 Li-Poly cells for more power flight duration.
Graupner 300 motor.
I would like to do the rotor mod where a little plate goes across the blades to re-inforce them, any ideas where I can get the plate? if I make one myself what material should I use.

I will also add the 2 diodes to the tail motor.

I think that will do to get me up in the air and start practicing..

any input will be great..
Thanks

My Heli just arrived and Im working on put it together..
Bear with me here this is my first RC-Heli. I got the hummingbird as a whole kit :
TX-Laser4 hitec- RX Hitec feather receiver, i see that there is
a switch included with the kit but in the assembly instructions doesn't show anywhere where the switch goes I just assume it will not be needed and i guess the siwtch will be the battery connector, the next issue is that the Century Gyro is not labeled, I see a 3 prong connector coming from the rudder on the hummin board that can goes either way into the gyro, Im looking at the instructions but the pics are in B/W there fore I cant tell which way the connector goes.
I assume the brown goes facing the ouside then there is a red in the middle and an orange facing inwards in the Gyro.
I hope thats right.. same on the receiver, its labeled BLACK-RED-YELLOW but the humminboard is BROWN-RED-ORANGE?
SO i guess BROWN will be the negative or BLACK lead into the receiver.
Thanks

I busted one of the main rotor blades already and I was doing some nice hovering! out of the box I guess the setup was right after all.. Does anyone know if the Picolo blade would fit the Hummingbird?... My local shop only carries Picolo parts.
Thank You

Flyfie - Is the rotor snapped clean in half?

If it is broken lengthways, or a chunk is missing, use sticky tape (Selotape her in the UK). You'll be amazed at what you can repair.

Picolo blades fit, you just need to shave some plastic off the ends I think - have a search.

p.s. I always recommend buying the kit with at least two sets of main and tail motors.

Good to hear you were hovering around so quickly :-)

Now you know what it feels like when "Black hawk is down!!"

I know Dodgey and like you suggested spare rotors, spare pack, replace motor and now the Hoverup Diode mod has to be added to the list, BTW how's that Brushless running , I was looking at the RAZOR 350 for a Hornet CP later ( I've been bitten real bad infact all the model modes on TX read Heli)

Brushless is cool...

Installed brushless and all separates. Tried to fly with 9 tooth pinion and 7.2v 1200Mah Li-Po's (High current) - could not get far off the ground. Changed to a 10 tooth pinion, bit better , but not much.

Put in th original heavy 8.4V 600Mah Ni-MH "Bird Seed" battery - Whoooooaaaa!!! she climbs like you have no idea!!!! Blimey! obviously 7.2V is not enought for the complete separates and brushless setup. Goint to change back to the 9 tooth pinion to see if the rate of climb is a bit more manageble. No point hovering at 40% throttle, as the motor runs most efficiently at 85%.

Leasons learnt:

Brushless motor only just gets warm
Need 10.4V E-Tec 3s battery for separates.
Maybe it's time for a CP heli now :-) - I do kind of fancy the Hornet but it has a drive-shaft tail rotor. Getting away from motor driven tails is a good thing, but the hornet's tail will not forgive boom strikes like motor driven tails do.

That's why I was checking the coreless motors seems there top is 7.2 volts so they should work good on 2s packs check out this site http://www.castlerc.com and look at the RAZOR 350 package, now from what I've learned CP Heli's benifit from a govenor to keep the RPM's constant for the CP check out the controller could you ask for more!! as far as the Hornet tail I think the advantage of not having to try and match a tail motor to the Main is a big Plus Motor controller the pheonix 10 package

You are right about the Govenor mode on CP. Not used for FP though.

The Hacker, Phoenix 10 combo I have is great. (the Phoenix 10 is awesome).

The Razor package certianly looks like good value for money! Can't tell the difference between the Phoenix 10 and 25.

I also run my Eco 8 on a Mega 22/20/4 with a Phoenix 45. Sweet too.

As far as tail setups go, you have definately made the right choice to start with the HB. It may not be ideal having a motor for the tail control, but they only cost a few quid to replace, and when you crash, not a lot happens.
When you crash a hornet, you usually break the tail boom (which can't be bodged as it has a drive shaft in it), drive shaft, maybe gears, blades... you get the picture. This is definately for the more experienced flyer.

I'm getting into the swing of things but I still crash all the time. Probably because I use the HBto practive stuff before I attempt it on my Eco 8 :-)

The Eco 8 is greeeaaat. It's fun to build and lovely to fly (from my little experience). I'm about 14 battery packs in now and can happily hover in my garden with 2 feet either side to spare :-)

Crashed her in a field once, with minor damage.

Having a largeer heli that actually makes heli-noise is awesome. You crap your pants first time you spin her up. You learn real quick to have a safety check list before EVER connecting the main battery or switching off the TX!!!

Flying is oh-so stable, in moderate winds too. Love it, just need better waether in the UK now :-(
