I have a Thunder power 1010C charger and a thunderpower TP-205 balancer.

When I plug in the balancer to the 5s battery pack it beeps non stop (but has no led blinking).

When I try to put it onto the charger it says voltage error.

The books say its possible to be overcharged, but I dont know how to fix it? No where does it say how to fix this?

Please help!

Cyrus -

You need to measure the voltage of the battery pack, and of the individual cells. That will tell you if the pack or a cell is overcharged or if perhaps the voltage of one or more cells has fallen too low. You will need a digital multimeter (cost: less than $10) to do this.

Knowing the voltages will help determine what your next step should be.

Hi,

I would you know how to read this out in the 1010C? I have a DMM, but how would I go about using the DMM to fix the problem?

Thanks!

Also, the 1010C says somewhere around 15.8 volts and then goes into the error mode.

Use the DMM to measure the battery voltage. If the battery voltage is too high or too low, many chargers will refuse to charge it.

You can also use the DMM to check the voltage of each individual cell in the pack, through the battery's balance connector. This will tell you if any one of the cells is too high or too low. Each cell should be no more than 4.2V and no less than 3.0V. And the voltages of the cells should be very close to one another. If the cells differ in voltage by even a couple of tenths of a volt, the pack is out of balance.

I don't know anything about your charger and balancer, so I can't help you there. Hopefully, someone familiar with them will contribute to this thread.

I'll do it tomorrow when I get a hold of my DMM, thanks!

Ok, so...... the battery voltage is 15.67V.

And each of the cells are:

3.177V
3.199V
3.025V
3.208V
3.064V

Seems like its NOT overcharged (which is good), but what do I do now?

The voltages are very low, almost (but not quite) to the point where the battery could be damaged. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with your charger and balancer, so I don't know why it is not charging. Do you have the charger set for 5 cells?

I called thunder power today. The guy told me I discharged it too much and to recover it I have to install the firmware upgrade because my 1010C charger (I bought it when it first came out) did not have this feature in the intial version. The reprogramming cable is $30. But he said if I ship him the battery and the charger he would take care of both of them for me for free. So, I might ship it out and have it done for me.

He said not to have the battery go below 3.6V per cell. But on my battery data sheet I could have SWORN it said set the speed controller to 3.0 volts per cell, which is what I did..........

This would not be the first time that a manufacturer provided conflicting information!

The most common recommendation is that lipos not be discharged below 3.0 volts per cell. Having said that, it is also recommended by many experts that to get the maximum lifetime from your lipos, you should not discharge them all the way down to 3.0 volts.

Personally, I would not run a lipo all the way down to 3.0V per cell. I'd give myself a comfortable margin above that in the interest of keeping the battery working well for a long time.
