Jon, I don't think you'll find a Warbird that will suit that style of flying. At least not one that is anywhere near scale, unless some country's military has had a Cap or Extra in its' inventory! I get the feeling you would not be all that welcome at the traditional warbird fly in anyway! Best of luck though, Chad.

Johnny

i believe you will find a warbird that will 3D
We can take some of the present warbirds, Move the wing and stab a little. Work with the planforms of the elev and rudder.Put on some mucho horsepower. Prop it properly. Paint it to perfection in camo, and we will have a 3D Warbird.
It can and will be done. I saw a P51(dont know which kit) with an OS 160 on it doing some TR's 2 weeks ago by the way. And he did attempt to do a waterfall, it was close, but very big waterfall.
He plans on redoing the stab and getting more elevator authority for some more Warbird 3D.

Later

Imagine how fast we could have eliminated the Nazi's if we had had 3-D P-51's and B-17's. Damn, Why didn't someone think of this before. Johnny Rebel for president!

How would standing still in the air with the nose of the plane pointed straight up have helped? If anything I think preforming that manuver would have made pilots a sitting duck.

Are you kidding? Just think about when one of them a**holes was hot on your tail? Wouldn't you like to have been able to just stop and let him shoot right past ya? All those crazy maneuvers would have scared em to death.

Did everyone else miss Johnny's joke and/or sarcasm???? I think he was being just a tad bit facetious after the entertaining posts in that other thread about hovering and warbirds. Oh well it got a big chuckle from me

Not welcome! Well I tell you that I'm in awe every time I see them hover over the top of a runway at a giant fly-in.
Why, I can watch them for hours and hours hovering that 40 percenter inches from their head.

I particularly like when they break the pattern and just stop to hover a few feet from the flightline. It sharpens my peripheral vision acuity and keeps me focused on TWO airplanes, not just one!

Lastly, I love it when at warbird meets they stop all flying at noon'ish for demonstration flights, as one IMACer finishes up, another begins the same routine, just in a different order.

Yep'r...He's welcome at any giant fly-in I go to! Just give me a bit of advanced warning though so I don't bother to bring an airplane.

a 3d zero and 3D P51 would be wonderful. Picture this at a meet.

You have a 40% zero hovering right over the runway. feet above the ground. From your right comes a 40% P51 coming in off a waterfall manuver. Slowing breaks forward into a harrier, hits servo for opening a gundoor, and hurls a stream of confetti at the zero. The 40%zero does a TRoll and hits the smoke. Loweres her down does a rudder bump on the runway. Unlimited vertical acceleration from there. The P51 hits a TR at center , rudder bump, then accelerates after the zero as if in a chase.
Both now enter the box from the right in tandem. Accelerate, Hit a Wall manuver., to a inverted harrier in formation.

Now tell me that would liven up a warbird crowd!!!

Hey, isnt that the maneuver Tom Cruise did in Top Gun? He just hit the brakes, Torque Rolled his f14 and let the f5 aggressor (errr, mig 28) fly right by. He did it twice, and worked both times.......

.... I don't recall seeing anything beyond a plane pulling up into a slow climb. I question how accurate those scenes were anyway.

Don't those guys shoot each other out of the sky from miles away with radar guided stuff?

Well Wayne, He is a rebel....That means he can do as he pleases right? LOL.

As for Mikes comment about Authenticity it in the movies. The mundaneness of actual radar induced air to air combat would not have been as exciting. Also, all of the high speed turning and hi closure/pass speeds would have made it a lot longer scene. Do you really think 6 jets at a closure speed of mach 2 would even see each other? The Tomcats carry the Phoenix missles, which have a serious over the horizon kill factor. I think the range on them is 60 miles when the target is going away from them, and up to 120 if head on. All the combatants hear would be lil tones in thier headsets, saying we are within range, or a threat indicator.
