I am asking that all posts relating to past events be removed by the poster. This thread is going to stick strictly to the question asked and not get into a political rehash of past events and hear-say. Most everyone knows the history here.

Thank you in advance for your understanding.

I received 2 TBM Shock Jets today. One was for me and the other for a friend. We were both pleasantly surprised with the quality of the build on both jets. One was the Tsunami scheme and the other the Tiger scheme. The laser cutting is superb, the covering is good and the fit of pieces is flawless. The plane comes with all surfaces pre-hinged. Assembly should be a breeze. I can't wait to get to work on it and see how it flies. I have no doubt it will be a fun trainer and a fun plane to just beat around with. Ignore all the accusations of the past and look at the plane for what it is. The price is too good to pass up if you need a fun jet! I feel TBM and MF Models have put a lot of effort into making this an easy jet to get some training on.

I flew one at Lake Wales last year and it was a hoot! It was Super Bee powered and had a ground roll of about 2 foot before airborne. Fully aerobatic, stable as a picnic table and lands slower than a butterfly.

All in all...pretty neat.

Hi All, I received my Shockjet yesterday (From my friend who ordered it for me) and all I can say is WOW, what a great job they seem to have done on getting this to the stage they sell it at. Hatches fit perfectly with the spring loaded latched already installed. Only 1 wrinkle in the covering that I have seen and that is maybe an inch by a quarter inch. Nothing!!
I'm putting in a JetCat P60. Only minor modifications and it flips right on in!
I picked it up at 2pm yesterday from my friend and by 4pm I had the wings glued and the 4 wing servo's mounted, the tail feathers are on!
The P60 and some tubes were installed this morning. This is going to be a really quick plane to put together and looks to be a great flyer to!

I have a couple of questions for you guys building these:

Is it or can it be made into a 2 piece wing (easier to transport)?
Is there access to the front of the turbine (such as to use a hand wand for a manual start engine)?

Thanks!
Jim

Jim, These are just my thoughts on your questions...
The wing comes in 2 halves. The wing is glued together with the main wing joiner being about 12 inches or so in length. To my way of thinking I don't think that a joiner that short will have the strength to hold the wing without glueing the halves together. It may be strong enough without glueing but I think I'd stay with glueing the wings together. (Again, my thoughts and observations and I may be totally wrong.)
The front of the Turbine is under the wing. The air inlets are either side of the fuel tank. Looking at mine with the tank installed there appears to be about 1/4 to 1/2 inch clearance that you may be able to insert some kind of starting wand to the front of the turbine. The angle would be 30 degrees off of dead straight.

i think I'll order one tomorrow as I have a pst600 laying around collecting dust. can a bigger than 50 oz. tank be fitted? It looks to be good for fun when not serious about scale looks.

Yes, a larger tank surely can be put in there. As you can see by the picture below there is over 1 3/4 inches on top of the Dubro 50 oz tank.
When I have gotten used to flying this beasty I am planning on putting in a Sullivan Boat type tank on top. This will increase the fuel load from 50 to 66 oz. I think I'd install it with the 'V' on top for the breather tube. The Beauty of this jet over others in this respect is that the fuel tank is right on the center of gravity so adding another on top will have very little to zilch impact on the balance...
Sullivan 16 oz Boat tank
As always, these are my opinions and anyone is free to dispute or put their views forward!

what sort of flight time do you get out of the 50 oz. tank? the v tank is a good idea.

seflyer, this is going to be dependant on the "burn" rate of your turbine. I believe the PST600 burns approx 8 ounces per minute. So, with 50 ounces I would say you are looking at a max of 6 mins of flight time. I am going to add the boat tank above my Dubro 50 ounce tank and increase it by a few minutes. I am using a Jet Central Super Bee in my Shockjet. Can't beat the service, the warranty or the turbine for power.

Bill brought the TBM demo Shockjet to my house for a big July 4th party. We had it flying in the back yard, passing the transmitter around. I am a 3D/aerobatic pilot and one of the other guys is a warbird driver. We both had a blast with it! There were about 60 people there with everyone watching. I live in a full scale fly in community and all the guests are aviation enthusiasts. Many question were fielded by Mr. Hatcher, from "How fast does it go?" to some pretty technical stuff!
As the daylight was fading, we put away the airplanes ( 35% Yak was flying too), loaded plates from the buffet style dining and even enjoyed some adult beverages!
When it was good and dark, we celebrate with a great fireworks show!!
RC props and jets,, food and friendship. A good time was had by all!

Another jet in the 'hood'.

Well, Tomorrow (Saturday) is the big day... My Shockjet is done, ready to go!
The only thing that I had issues with in the last minute is that there are no control throws listed anywhere that I could find either on TBM or RCU Forums.
I'll see if I can get any video of the flight tomorrow. (Deep Breath - Calm Down)

I know that the standard JetCat FOD screen does not fit but a home made one may fit.
Another thing you can look into and I am going to do once I get some mesh screen is to put the mesh over the air intakes to stop the C**P coming in and getting sucked into the turbine. I had done this on my Baby Boomerang and it seemed to work fine. I had no issues at all with any kind of junk being sucked in and no air restriction at all.

Hope this helps

George

First impressions - DON'T Fly it if you almost put your normal sport plane into the ground right before the test fly. I managed to get it down in one piece but boy, was it close!
Ok, Out in the sunlight it is a nice looking jet. Big! Got lots of ooo's and ahhhh's from the p'nut gallery!
Well, enough stalling and fire it up! Per the TBM Video, it takes off in about 20 odd feet on tarmac. A couple of clicks aileron and it is nice and level. Oh, Forgot to take the flaps up. The plane took a good nosedive as soon as the flaps were retracted! About 8-10 clicks up trim on the elevator had it flying level.
A couple of circuits to settle the nerves and a slow fly by with half and then full flaps showed a major lifting of the nose! Nothing extravagant but still enough to make landing while holding down elevator a pain in the a$$.
I Landed it ok on half flaps (Maybe a little fast) and checked everything over. Some reason the brake servo arm was not set to where I had it set so the brake was not being engaged! Also, a set screw had come loose (Or I forgot to tighten it) on the nose wheel but this was easy to fix.
I set the flap switch to add in down elevator. Up for the next flight and again, taking off in 20 ft or so. Test the flaps out in a slow fly by and I had mixed in to much down elevator. Flipped the flap switch and it took a nosedive. Oh well, I'll have to remember that for the landing. This thing is so quiet coming towards you that you really have a hard time hearing it until it is almost upon you. then it flashes by at a pretty good clip. Estimates by me put it around 140 odd mph. Tomorrow the guys will have the radar gun out to check the speeds.
3rd flight was much better, my nerves had all but gone away and the kinks pretty much worked out. This is one nice flying plane. Very stable. very predictable, pretty fast for a trainer! The control throws that I listed on my build blog seem to be pretty much spot on. I'll try to post some video if I can get the tape from FALCONCO.
Tomorrow, I'll be out again and really put it thru it's paces. More of a report there. However, this is a really nice flyer. I flew for 5 minutes from takeoff roll to timer going off, Landed and still have about a third of a tank of fuel left! That is with the standard DuBro 50 oz tank. I'm still going to look at getting the addl tank for another 16 oz fuel.

George
