My freind wants a cheap two stroke engine for a goldberg super chipmunk and has asked me which would be better a Magnum 108 or the ST 90. So I in trun ask all of you for your input considering I haven't had either one of these engines. Or if you know of another good engine in this price range. I told him YS 91 but he didn't like to hear that Thanks!!

I currently have both a Magnum XL1.08A and a ST75. The Magnum was a little cheaper mostly because Global Hobby has been clearancing them out before introducing a newer version, either XLS or AII. Magnum already has new .91 and 1.20 2strokes out. The older Magnums are a rung below the STs in terms of quality and finish, but are good running engines nonetheless. My 1.08 was real tight when new and would bind terribly near TDC, requiring an extra heavy duty starter to get it going. Once broken in, however, it runs fairly smoothly. If your friend is really pinching pennies, try to catch a closeout-priced Magnum 1.08.

The ST75 OTOH is a ringed engine and so took a little longer to break in but, like any other STs I've had, should last a long long time. If you can still find a NIB Italian made ST90, buy it. Your friend might pay a little more but will be happier in the long run with it. We'll have to wait and see the relative quality of the newer STs soon to come out of China.

Just bear in mind neither one of these are powerhouses in their respective size category. Don't expect OS-like power. But everything has its place, and these are good choices for general pupose sport flying.
