Brushed electric motors run fine underwater, its dirt and grit you have to worry about.

I haven't found any places to race yet. Also are the wires leading to the motor waterproof?

I battle ships in warship combat. As stated, the water itself is not a major problem for brushed motors. The dirt, grit, moss, and any other junk in the water creates the real problems. Just blow the water out of the motor after running and remember proper lubrication. As for the wiring outside the motor, your biggest problem is usually corrosion on the connections. In our hobby, we use everything from heat shrink tubing around connections, to corrosion X or scotch-kote to cover any exposed wiring. I good safety item to add is an inline fuse. This way if you have some type of short, you won't lose the smoke.
