Where can I get some really good information about NMH batteries. I want to switch over to them and I need to learn all I can about them. Also where the best place to buy them with a really high quality charger. I will be using these in 1/3 scale size aeorbatic airplanes. Thanks, Skip

Is this a 1/3 scale electric powered acft. or do you just need a flight pack? I fly electric powered acft. and I prefer Nicads to power a motor but Nimhs are great as flight packs and I use them in my transmitter. On electric powered acft we just use one extra cell with nimhs. They have more internal resistance so the extra cell helps. Small nimhs, as used in a flight pack ,need to be charged slowly. I use a trickle charger for mine in my transmitter. Nihms lifespan is less then nicads too. In a 1/3 size acft. the weight savings of nihms will be small. For a glider it would be more important and helpfull to use nihms.

I was referring to an airborne flight pack for a gas powered 1/3 scale Extra.
Also where the best place to buy them with a really high quality charger. I will be using these in 1/3 scale size aeorbatic airplanes.
This is relative to your normal pre-flight activity. If you regularly check the status of your batteries prior to each flight you should have no undue concern with minor differences in quality. IMHO, if you check your packs regularly and cycle them (NICADS) periodically you should have little to no concern for reliability, regardless of what you paid for the battery pack or the manufacturer of the cells.

Quality: How is this related to battery packs? I know most people associate Sanyo and Panasonic batteries with good quality. Why is this so? They are certainly more expensive then all the rest. Why is my generic 3500mah NIMH 6-volt RX pack not considered good quality? I certainly paid significantly less for it than an equivalent Panasonic pack.

Final note: I've been scoffing up inexpensive batteries for a couple of years and routinely use them in my airplanes. I have never had an airplane misshap due to a battery failure, nor have I yet to detect a bad battery pack after it passed my initial screening. Granted, I do not have any batteries that have been in service for many years and probably will not -- as soon as I detect a problem I will chuck them. (I purchased 24 1400 quick charge SubC Sanyo NICADS a couple of years ago. Out of 24 I found 3 bad ones -- they were bad from the start. I still use some of those cells in my glow starters)

My hanger has the following to support my batteries:

1) Hobbico Field (FAST) Charger Mark II -- charges multiple cell NICADS, NIMHS, and LIONS off of my 12-volt field box battery.

2) Dymond Super Turbo Charger -- fully cycle capable for virtually any battery type I wish to process. I use this both in the field and attached to a 12volt 24Amp DC power supply in my work shop.

3) Some of my airplanes that contain 4.8volt RX packs have battery monitors installed -- those devices with little green and red lights. I use this as a guide to determine when to check the battery.

4) My most important piece of equipment is a Digital Hobbico Loaded voltmeter -- when my 4.8 volt batteries get below 5 volts and I'm looking at more than one more flight for the day they get peaked with my #1. When my TX voltage gets below 10 volts I look for the charger.

Regardless of cost, batteries are the cheapest component in my airplanes, and the most important maintenance/monitored item.

I bought 10 NiMH 1400 mah batteries from Wacky Willey's for $1 apiece and charged them through my brand new Triton charger. The batteries wouldn't take much charge at all when I powered the Triton with a 500 ma wall transformer. When I used my car battery it worked fine.
I'm running 5 cell packs to an FMA Magnum reciever. When I connect it all the elevator servos, Hitec 605's go haywire while the other 4 servos including two 605's are ok. The system is all ok when I connect up a 4 cell pack. Is the Magnum unable to handle the 5 cell pack?
