Status: offline 		How do the smoke systems fitted on model aircraft work? What pressurises them, what is the "smoke", etc.

Is it something that can be done DIY or are there off the shelf products.

Status: offline 		Although I don't own a smoke system, I believe it's done by having an oil tank with a pump between it and the muffler. FLip a switch and its starts pumping oil into the exhaust pipe and POOF!

Status: offline 		I haven't tried this yet, but there are smoke systems that don't use a pump. The muffler pressure is used to force the smoke fluid into the exhaust the same way it's used for the fuel system.
