Hi,

I'm new to the electric RC, so sorry if these are newbie Q's

I bought the Castle Sidewinder 5700kv motor and ESC and I'm running it on a 7 cell NiMH 4500 mah

It felt like it was reaching top speed in a matter of seconds so I put in a larger pinion gear, went from stock to 24T pinion and just took it for a testspin

The performance was nice but the thing got hot!!

Motor ESC and battery where all around 200-210°F !!!! After one battery run on pavement!

So is the pinion too large? or is there some setting in the ESC to keep things cooler?

Whats the best way to achive better topspeed without melting the stuff?

what truck or car you running?
brushless systems need not to upgrade pinion, not recommended. higher speeds reached with- higher voltage batteries.

I'm running the HPI E-Firestorm

Really? I thought the obvious way to get higher topspeed would be to change the gearing

it is if you running stock motors and sports pack batteries . Brusless systems heat up faster with bigger gear ratio

so for more topspeed go back to stock and change the gearing?? that doesn't sound right

what about a smaller spur gear?

READ CAREFULLY DO NOT CHANGE NOTHING IF YOU HAVE A BRUSHLESS SYSTEM, YOUR BATTERRY SHOULD BE
A 6-CELL 7.2 VOLTS NIMH 3300 OR HIGHER. IF YOU WANT HIGHER SPEEDS GET A 7 CELL 8.4 NIMH 3300/HUMP OR HIGHER -
A 8 CELL 9.6 VOLTS NIMH 3300/HUMP OR HIGHER, IF YOU WANT HIGHER SPEEDS GET A ? NEVER SEEN A 9 CELL - 10 CELL I HAVE SEEN BUT THAT HAS TO MUCH VOLTAGE, I BELIEVE YOU SHOULD GO LIPO IF SPEED YOU SEEK IS NOT REACHED. BRUSHLESS SYSTEM I BELIEVE CAN ONLY GO TO 11.1 VOLTS LIMITS, IF THERE'S ANYTHING OTHER THAT, I HAVE NOT SEEN IT YET.

no need to shout

but it makes no sense to me that you can't change the gearing, the car isn't even brushless stock

I'm guessing I was under or overgeared

if anyone else has some useful help, please post!

I think you are on the right track, according to a stickie post on this forum regarding gearing. I myself have a e-Firestorm and been thinking similarly so I ran the numbers (if I understood the method correctly) based on a Firestorm.

Being under the sweet spot but as close as possible would be done with a stock spur and 31t pinion (-0,0388) but being right on spot would be done using 93t spur and 35t pinion which results in 0,002933, which is positive number but damn close to zero (which as I understand is the goal here).

If we use that as basis (93/35) and try to work out theoratical max speed, according to my calculations, it would reach 54 mph. While the stock spur and pinion would only get you 31,32 mph using the same motor.

I´m not 100% on these things but according to this post ( Understanding Gear Selections ) being on the "sweet spot" would result in LESS heat (i.e. not overgeared). Increasing the pinion would then get you closer to the sweet spot, yet you experience more heat being generated. Since my knowledge is pretty much based on the previously mentioned post on these things I cannot understand why that would happen.

what's faster than brushless?
what's the highest current output release batterry?
want to maintain speed all around or increased after a turn? - don't mean to shout, here to help - I'm sorry - long day at my track.

You need a smaller pinion.

I run the 5700 in a rustler with a 16t pinion it goes 35mph on the road with a 7.4v lipo. I use a 25t pinion for speed run and it goes 48mph and gets too hot. Now Ive got an aluminum transmission and the temps stay lower.

Don't listen to sircc... He really doesn't know what hes talking about.. I would go lower brushless is suppose to hit it in a matter of seconds... Make sure you have no no binding and everything runs smoothly... Not completely sure but I think you can use a castle link to get tuned to your specs..Try running a bec to cool it some more or possibily even a Fan.. Maybe some smaller tires or something..Now that i think of it theres no way you should really be running that hot.. Make sure of binding and that it rolls smooth

thanks for the input guys

the car just has crazy performance off the line, it just wheelies and flips over if I'm not careful, to me its too much and I would like to gear it towards higher speeds

Caaine, thats very interesting, but according to that formula I should have been closer to the sweet spot with the 24T pinion??

I'll do some more testing and make sure there is no friction in the drivetrain and its running smoothly. I have the castle link software and also look at some settings there to keep things cooler

http://SIRCLEGION.COMthat's real smart of you he's already running hot and you recommend going lower brushless "hey einstein you want a melt down".
standard is standard, once you go top of the line equip, there's no way of getting more power out of your truck changing your pinion mostly help getting off the line or after a turn in my opinion! you can however reach higher speeds with a higher voltage battery, added you provide a fan for your motor.but since you know so much will please come to my track and give me and my members a demo.
