Thanks guys. I'm thinking I'll treat this like a 2M plane since it's as close I'm going to get for awhile. I'm also hoping to work with Scott a little more next season so a similar setup to his would be helpful. I don't think the weight of a redundant system will be an issue. Guys are flying the plane on 10S and liking it; I'll probably go with an 8S Scorpion setup for a little extra power over stock suggestion.

I'm using Ed's regulators on two of my planes already and will surely talk to him for the next one. He is great to talk to (as is Scott )

So if you guys have recommendations for ANY electric equipment - chargers, batteries, whatever. I want to do this right so I can actually fly my plane next summer without worrying about problems. Really a disappointing season for me this year.

Do Castle Creations ESCs have fully proportional braking? I was looking at the Phoenix HV85 and the new Phoenix ICE HV they are coming out with.

What's funny is I don't even really know what fully proportional braking is I just know I need a lot of braking control with my new plane

Ahh sorry about my posts JAS if they have been a little irrelevant over the last few days, just got out of a major operation and found this forum so was posting a little too off-topic in some places.

Sorry about that.

EDIT: wow, probably not me lol, this thread is old

Joe,

Proportional braking means that you can control the amount of brake that the speed controller produces. For example, with the Schulze 32.80KA, you setup a throttle curve, and point one and below are setup to be your brake. All of the other points are adjusted to produce a linear curve with the remaining portion of the throttle curve. Point one on the transmitter is typically a good ways up the graph, (the curve I have here the first point is set at 62, but the throttle stick only moves up about 1/8 of the travel), and the other points are tweaked to provide the balance of the throw.

Now, this is setup on a switch that limits the throw on the bottom end of your throttle so you don't get down below point one for your regular flying, but when you want the brake to activate, you flip the switch and use the throttle stick throw you have to adjust. It's sort of complicated, but the results are amazing on the Pletty/Shulze combo.

I'm not sure about the proportional brake on the CC ESC's, ask Dave Lockhart. I will say that you very more than likely will it for a while. You only need the brake to fit in rolls on a downline, for example the 2/2 down on the Figure '9' in P09. In Sportsman and Intermediate, and even Advanced, and likely Masters (although there may be a use for it in Masters), it simply isn't needed. Throttle control is key, if you can't control the throttle now, how do you think it will be easier when you throw something else into the mix?

Just food for thought from an insomniac.

The CC controllers have at least the ability for 50% or 100% braking, and either short or longer time to start braking. Not sure if there's much more control than that, but maybe it's enough?

Everyone flying the Wind 110 reports a lot of speed in down lines, and it's really noticeable in videos. Good braking power seems pretty necessary with this plane.

Edited for spelling.

The CC does have a brake. Most ESC's have a brake. It's nice to have, don't get me wrong, but a proportional brake isn't something needed in Intermediate. A brake is very nice to have on any electric airplane. Re-reading my post, I think I came across as saying a brake is not necessary, however I intended to say a proportional brake is not necessary.

Braking isn't necessary period. I have never used it flying Masters. I just set a low idle and that's all I need. In Intermediate there really aren't any long downlines to have a need for it Joe. It's just one more thing to worry about. I am a believer of the KISS principle.

By setting a low idle, does the prop spool up as the plane accelerates, or does it hold a constant RPM? If it stays constant, that's all I want. Not sure if you can do that with the CC ESCs?

There are a lot of people saying that braking is necessary with this plane, even through cubans, etc. Of course, I have no idea if these people know what throttle management is!

Just got an email from Castle Creations - with the PC programmer link the brake setting is adjustable from 0% to 100% in 1% increments. Perfect!

Joe, the maneuvers you are flying don't warrant the need. If I can comfortably fly the vertical hourglass, 8-sided loop, Figure-9 etc. in Masters, you don't need to use it. People read too much into this stuff. At your level you should only be worried about stick time, not dialing in some braking. I've flown without it with both geared inrunners(Hacker C50 13XL) and outrunners (Pletty 30-10 EVO and Torque 4014T).

Gotta agree with Joe. Speed management is much more related to throttle use than braking. Learn to control your speed with the throttle, which means throttle back slowly over the top of things and such. Brakes and other things have their place, but you will be much better served learning to do everything with the stick.

Ok, just what I need to hear! I like simple...

Can anyone tell me if the Neu 1917 3Y or 2Y is a great engine to run on 10S? I was looking at Scorpion but would prefer something a little more 'high end'. The Neu is a direct fit.

I've got a serious question. Coke or Pepsi? I prefer Coke even though Pepsi was born in the Carolinas.

I hate Monster. I think because it's not carbonated (or maybe I just got a flat one). I prefer either Red Bull or Rockstar.

A mate of mine was put in hospital from drinking way too many energy drinks, kinda put me off them. there nice but should really be kept in moderation.

Love a good old Ginger Beer though, specially if its ice cold.

I don't drink energy drinks that often. Maybe two a week at the absolute most, most of the time I go weeks without them. I don't really get energy from them anymore.

In the States, they have very concentrated energy drinks, that are about the size of a shot. There really isn't anything them that's bad for you I guess, but when they have 5000% your daily reccomended values of vitamins, that's a little scary. They work though!

Energy drinks do weird things to me, too. They are great though when it's been a long night of studying and an early morning standing at the bus stop for an 8:30 EE class. Coffee is one thing, but a good energy drink and I'm on my electrical game by the time I get to class.

I like Rockstar, and NOS, but I do the sugar free/low carb.

The problem with energy drinks is it boosts your production or endorphins and adrenaline, and if these are in too high quantities in your system and are just sitting there not being burned off it can cause serious harm, yer one a day is fine if your an active person but more than the recommended limit is risky.

seen a few cases of people having heart murmurs in clubs from wayy too many Vodka Redbulls, not a nice experience

Unfortunately I've just come out of major surgery so I can't drink too much atm, sucks but it means I've lost a little weight which is nice

Hey everyone. It's been a while since I've posted here. I'm spending my first year in college at Georgia Tech. Had a hectic schedule first semester but hopefully should lighten up in the spring. Anyways, In the spare time that I do have, I've been making some drawings of potential scratch builds in the near future (Improvements of my GT Express). I was wondering what a good wing area I should aim for with a bipe with wingspan of about 60"-64"?

Thanks
-Chris
