I tried but the stock screw would not fit in the new location. Did you use a different size screw ?

I used a bit shorter screw I had lying around as the stock screw head stripped when I was removing it Thanks Brian Sorry forgot to put this bit in earlier!

As of now mine seems to be okay. It is still very new so I will check again in a month. Thanks to the OP for the tip to check it out anyways.

I thought the idea of the wire spring was to let the wire bundle move freely back and forth within the spring retainer?

I am not sure they steped up to the plate, as much as they were hit in the head with it, the first thing they told people "There was no problem". I will look at mine tomorrow, too late tonite to do it.

Yup, mine too. I bought my Heli X9303 late April '08. I've never opened the case until I read this thread. My aileron gimbal wire bundle has a definite "nick" in the insulation but it's not yet cut through to the bare wire. I'll follow the JR fix plus will relieve the very sharp edge on the small black regulator chip on the RF board.

Nice to see Horizon step up and acknowledge the problem. Since I've registered online, it would nice if they emailed a warning to all X9303 owners.

depends on location and application - in this case -where the wire bundle is located the length take up is completely away from the wire retainer.

Ultmate1 Just want to thank you for all the pictures/suggetions you made. I tried the approved Horizon method but found that the gimbal would "catch" on the wire when it was run inside the support post. I suspect Horizon did not use your method because you needed to find a screw that fit correctly and they have no control over what screw you may use - too long, too short, too thin or too fat. I am sure somebody would have used a large self tapping screw and then have the gimbal unit crack or break and they would be calling wanting it fixed under warranty. Their solution required no additional parts and was quite simple and it solves the chaffing problem. Your solution seems to be much more elegant and makes more sense to me so that is the one I used.

Thanks.

Mark

mimhoff wrote, "I tried the approved Horizon method but found that the gimbal would "catch" on the wire when it was run inside the support post. " I also noticed the wire being caught against the gimbal when "up elevator" was being commanded. Although I changed mine to the JR method, I think mounting the wire like ultimate1 is better. I plan to go back in and give a serious look at ultimate1's mod.

This is a good place to ask what are the acceptable adhesives to use on the wire bundles and where can you get them. I know I have heard of Shoe Goo (I think) but, I do not recall ever seeing it for sale - comments please.

I also feel that the response from Horizion on this issue was commendable and that they deserve a well done. In todays world, filled with product liability issues, to develop a fix, get legals' approval, get corporate approval and then communicate it, can be a very challenging process. This event also demonstrated that it would have been much easier and quicker to communicate the problem to Horizon if their RCU vendor forum had been in operation. Danny - we miss you and would love to see you back online again. Bottom line - thank you to the Horizon Team that made this happen so quickly.

Also and specifically, we owe a real debt of thanks to a number of fellow RC folks that found, documented and communicated the issue to all of us and to Horizon.

E6000 is also known as Shoo Goo. Wally World, or Arts and Crafts stores carry it. Here, even Lowe's and Home Depot carry the E 6000.

Holy guacamole!
Modelers who ar not familiar with Goo?
This stuf was invented many years ago - when the US still made layup construction sneakers etc..
Anyway - it is a solvent based adhesive which has been adopted by everyone - You can get the same stuff- labeled as Plumber's Goo
Household Goo
Shoe Goo-
Mechanic's Goo
Moo Goo Ga Pai etc..
all the same stuff
There is even a thinner , slightly runnier version which is the best canopy adhesive I have found -

Here is one source for Electronic Grade Silicone Sealant/Adhesive.

It is probably overkill for this problem. I would go with the Goo.

It's also the best thing I have found for mounting pilots to cockpit floor super strong but never goes brittle!

ok, I checked mine today and its ok. I put a piece of black elect tape over the wire for safty and will check it once a month. I got mine at toledo this spring and have used it a bit, so I worried that I might have a problem.

Thanks for the warning, I am hoping they come up with a real fix and it can be done this winter.

Hello Airbusdrvr,
Many thanks for the info. I rerouted my wiring and was lucky that only a tiny bit of wear had happened. I have the PC DATA Kit from Horizon for my JRxp9303 and I installed it in my Windows XP and Vista without any problems.
I now have copies of my transmitter in both computers. I hope I never have to use it, but if I do have to replace the JRXP9303 2.4Ghz, I will have all the options ready to downlaod.
You should get the "Atta Boy of the Year" award.

Thanks,

George G. Royal

I must add another big thank you to airbusdrvr. My X9303 was also a victim...

As to the fix, the one proposed by Ultimate1 is certainly better than the one proposed by Horizon/JR. The latter does lead to the wire bundle getting caught by the gimbals during certain movements. A couple of additional minor tips: a) the original screw for the wire retainer can be used in Ultimate1's method - simply add a couple of small washers between the wire retainer and the screw head; b) Many CVS stores sell Shoe Goo.

I hope Horizon/JR's fix does not lead to another type of wire damage from the wire bundle getting caught by the gimbals... Regardless of eventual damage, one does have tactile sensation when the wire bundle gets caught and it does not feel good.

Happy flying,
Beavis
