Hello, Gentleman.

I`m from Brasil and here imported fuels are getting more and more expensive throughout this year, for international market reasons.

The 2 strokers glow pilots already know how to mix their own blend of fuel, zero nitro and mostly with good results.

I`m trying to do some research about if and how can a 4 Stroke glow engine be able to perform well with Zero Nitro Fuel.

If it`ll be needed to do some work in the head, lower or rise the compression ratio, etc.

If anyone ever heard of such a use of 4 strokers I`d be mostly thankfull to hear from.

Of course, any comments, tips or analysis on this matter are welcome, too.

Tks

Tifoso

Some 4-strokes will cope better than others, it all depends on their compression ratio.

Low-compression engines like the YS and some Saitos will be well-down on power and may not idle or transition too well.

Higher compression engines like the Magnum/ASP/Sanye and some OS will fare a little better.

All these engines will however, require very careful setting of the needles with 0% nitro to get any kind of useful results.

Woops, I just made a reply in the other thread before I saw this one .
Basically, same as a 2 stroke, they run best on zero nitro with about a 13.5:1 compression. After all, whether it's 2 stroke or 4 stroke, they're still all glow engines. Early Saitos were, I believe, up around the 15:1 mark because they were designed to run with zero nitro.

Someone in my club has experimented with his later Saitos and found 13.5:1 is ideal and adds 5% acetone to stop kicking back and throwing props. His method for raising compression was to mill something like 1mm off the crankcase where the barrel seats. With a 4 stroke there's the added complication of knowing what the minimum valve clearance is as well as the squish clearance. Also, if the head/barrel is lowered is there enough tappet adjustment or would it need shorter push rods? If this is a problem then a longer conrod could be made to raise the compression instead.

Obas, nice to see your replys, Gentlemen, thanks a lot for the info`s.

So, basicaly it`s a matter of matching the Compression ratio to the fuel, taking care os the valves clearance and adding some Acetone to the fuel blend..

Of course precise adjusting of the misture and carefull search of the correct propeller are tops, too...

I`ll bem doing some practical research with a ASP .61 4T thats lying around and I`ll share the results here.

Tks again

Blue skies for all

Tifoso
