Zepher69 -> J&G 25cc Watercooled Motor info and questions (8/14/2008 11:05 PM)

Hi, I have an Eliminator II Deep Vee Hull with a J&G 25cc billet boat motor that is watercooled and had some questions about the motor and the water cooling system. First, has anyone used this motor or know where I can find a manual an info about it? I want to make sure the water cooling system is working right before I put it on the lake. Am I right that the motor picks up water to cool the head from the rudder as it's moving? My boat has an automatic pump that's not hooked up to the lines and wondered if I should hook it up and how to do it. Also, has anyone tried a small radiator for running in salt/brackish water? I'm afraid to take it in salt water if the motor is cooled by water it takes in. I know this motor is supposed to rip, but I'm afraid to rev it until I get the cooling system sorted. I'd like to find a diagram of the water lines for the J&G motor or other watercooled zenoah engines that are similar[image][/image]. I'd also like to find info about hooking up the automatic water pump. Check out the pics ->

*Just saw a post about the vacuum water pump > http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7835176/tm.htm

No expert on the J&G but generally yes the engine will get water from a rudder pickup whilst underway. Other options are a prop blast pickup, a transom pickup or a flush pickup on the bottom of the hull. Water pumps are really not needed as you are rarely puttering around once you hit the water!
Route for the water lines is from pickup to low fixing on the head, out from the upper fixing. From there to the exhaust flange, then to the pipe coupler and finally overboard. Always in at the bottom and out at the top to prevent airlocks.
You may want to use a second pickup and have a separate circuit for the flange and pipe.
I run in salt/brackish water all the time without any problems. I take fresh water with me to flush the system at the end of the day and then spray WD40 or similar into the cooling head. WD40, CRC 6-66 or CRC 5-56 and CRC2-26, CRC 3-36 and a strict maintenance regime is essential to keep the boat, engine and radio stuff in good working order. I generally strip most things down after a weekends running, wash with fresh water, dry and lubricate.
Your radio box MUST be watertight, nothing will kill your radio faster or more effectively than a dose of salt water[:(]

I run a J&G motor here in salt water (San Diego) all the time...no problems. Just need to do extra good clean up!

I think it has a rudder pickup. Don't think I'll use the mechanical water pump. What mixture do you use for your J&G? 20:1? What plug do you use? So, I guess it's a good idea to flush the system with fresh water after a salt water run. What o you do, just attach a water bottle to the pickup line? & WD40 is OK to spray into the cooling head? Any other engine maintenance tasks post run? Thanks for the info about the water pickups and maintenance. [:D]

Also, I'm curious if I should run a Fail Safe device on my boat with the J&G? It seems like it defaults back to idle and wanted to make sure if I needed one or not. Also, my boat doesn't have a kill switch and was wondering the best way to shut it down, besides running out of gas. Also wondering if I should get a clutch and run the water pump. The boat would be more 'user friendly' being able to idle, etc. Without one I wonder how you could get it close enough to shut it down with a kill switch anyway. Anyway, just wanting to get my ducks in a row before a trip out to the pond. [sm=drowning.gif]

Yes and yes [sm=thumbup.gif]

Rinse and spray all moving parts. Remove your flex, rinse, dry and relube. I store mine in a tube of ATF between sessions.

A failsafe is not a bad idea regardless. You should set your idle with the radio, throw away the idle screw on the carb. You shut down the motor with full brake i.e close the throttle completely.

I would run it in one of the channels (in fresh water) for the first couple of tries if I were you. That red cooling lines looks like red Tygon, silicone waterlines are better (like the blue stuff) You can see from the pic that your header has been bent, check for water leaks around the coupler. Personally I think you need to run it a few times and make sure it is what you want before spending too much money on fixing things that aren't really broke. You know it was set-up and run like it is so after a check up give it a run.

One other thing when you are running in salt water. I keep a 2.5 Gal. garden sprayer with me and after every run i hose the complete boat down with fresh water from the sprayer. Fail safes are good to have. And as far as shutting the motor off; just put your finger over the carb.

Don't think I'll put it in salt or brackish water at first, but I was wondering if I could and what the process would be to clean it, flush it, etc. The header isn't bent, the pipe is just loose and it stays in place with a bracket in the back. Might need to take some new pics of it as I didn't notice it looking bent. Will probably get a failsafe just to be-safe. That's a good idea about trimming the throttle so you can shut it off with 0% throttle. Just like airplanes, where it's manditory to be able to shut off the engine with the radio, by pulling back on the throttle stick all the way, thanks for the tip. It has a brass prop and the motor is a direct gear drive, so the prop is always spinning. What's a good procedure to start it, without getting hit by the prop? The boat is big, 54" or so, and is sorta hard to start an am not sure the best way to launch it safely. Was looking at a clutch, but would have to use a high HP model because of the power of the J&G engine. Anyway, thanks for the help.
