i guess i am committed to repainting the main landing gear now.  i was sanding the white paint off so i could paint them the alluminum color i bought.  never used this airbrush before so i will try painting with it for the first time.  Bristol water based paint so i guess i need to thin the paint with half water and half paint for airbrushing.  then you polish it with a dry soft cloth for metal luster look.  hope it turns out and will post pictures when i get it done.

Well good luck with that. I found a crack in the bottom of my gear by the wheel pant from the crash on landing. I will repair it with jet glue later today. Just need to get a prop and I will be ready to fly. I also found I put + expo in instead of - expo. Made the changes in the radio. I am thinking the plane should fly better next time out.

So I've finally started building this plane.

Here is the gear I will be running:

Hyperion HP-Z5045-B18 149kv for a Motor
Turnigy 100HV ESC
3 x 4S Zippy Flightmax 5000mah (For 12S)
Fasst 7 channel receiver
4 x HS-5625MG (Ailerons/Elev half)
1 x HS-5985MG (Rudder)
3 x CCBEC (1 on Rudder/Receiver), (1 on Left Elev half + Left ail), (1 on Right Elev half + right ail)

CCBEC's will be run off one of the 4S flight packs and set for 6.8v operation.

Anticipated output based on "Geoff Dryer"'s motor test results
Xoar 24x10 prop
27 lb 10 oz thrust
71.5 Amps
3134 Watts

Looks like people with DA-50's up front are having to move their receiver and ignition batteries up over the motor box AND add around a pound of lead. Apparently the nose is too stubby. This is the first e-build on this model that I am aware of. The plan is to cut a hinged access hatch into the massive cowl and mount the batteries into a tray that goes directly under the motor its self so the batteries are actually at the very tip of the nose. This will put about 5.5 pounds in the nose which should allow me to get to CG without addding any weight.

If this works out as planned this will ironically make the plane lighter than any of the gas setups. People are ending up with 19-21 pound AUW's DRY with a gas setup and complaining about performance. I'm hoping for a sub 19lb AUW ready to go. We'll have to wait and see were the final numbers come in at.

i guess my 62cc will get about 31 pounds of thrust.

sgoen saying the 62cc has more than enough power for the plane so im confident.

i started to paint the landing gear.  looks terrible with the paint i bought.  needs more coats and some polishing to get it to look better.

got some hinges glued in on one aileron with the Pacer PT-55 hinge glue i used.  was easy to do.  first i used multipurpose plastic safe oil on the hinge points, then just poured the glue in the hole and some on the hinge and insert in the hole, wipe the excess glue away and let it set for 30 minutes or more.  works well.

my brother is going to help me finish this thing this weekend so i can finally get it up and flying.

Wings are done. Using all the supplied hardware minus the airwild servo arms. The supplied hardware actually looks really decent quality. Put locktight on all the screws. Roughend up the carbon guide tubes and CA'd them in. I had to solder about 6" of extra length into the servo wire.

I had epoxied in the hinges on the ailerons a few weeks ago. The included hinges also look really decent. I exerted some hard forces on one to test it out before I glued them in and it seemed to be solid and well constructed.

Pics look good. Just remember this plane is very tail heavy. It has to do with it having such a short nose. Keep the weight down in the e have had a lot of rain here.

Moving along.. Due to the heavy loads that will be imposed on the firewall and motor box with all that weight up front I went ahead and reinforced the firewall and the whole motorbox with carbon fiber.

I then cut out a hatch from the cowl, hinged it using CA hinges and boxed it in with ply. Mounted up the motor and made the battery tray. With a 2 pound motor and 3.3 pounds of lipos in the nose the plane still seems like it will be tail heavy...go figure.... May end up having to put lead in the nose (I SURE HOPE NOT!!).

maybe you need to extend the motor out another inch before adding weight??

Finally got time to put a new muffler on the RCGF 62, after the other one fell all apart . Went back with 3/16 x 1" fender washers (curved them) on the outside of the new muffler with 5 x 70mm bolts going all the way through. It might still come all apart but it won't fall off the motor!!!! Hope to get it in the air this weekend. It's just about been to HOT to fly here, 95-99 + 75deg dewpoint = 105-110 deg in the shade! HOT-HOT-HOT and very MUGGGY!
Time to go find a cool spot .

I got to test fly the plane for the second time yesterday. After makeing all the changes to the radio and plane, the plane flue much better. The only problem I had was the muffler fell off, wrong loctite used. I could not get the RCGF 62 to idle down to land. Had to use engine kill switch. Landing pulled the gear out again. Will repair and get a new muffler and try again. Very happy with the power and the way the plane flue in the air.

The stock muffler seems to suck, because of the way that it is held on to engine. I broke off the back tabs and used different bolts with red loctite and that did the trick. I also didn't use the stock muffler, I had a can setup.

SGOEN where do you have the CG set at? What is your all up weight? What size prop you swinging and any rpm readings?

I balanced the plane on the wing tube. That was the easyest way to do it for me. The plane weight is just under 20 Lbs, and I am using a Zinger Pro 22x10 prop. No reading from the engine.

z06kal She sure looks good and I hoe you can keep us up to date as to how she handles. Bobzalla moved his CG to the frount of the wing tube after his first flight. He posted on here that his first flight he was tail heavy and was lucky to land it in one peace. You are the first electric powered one on this plane. Are you able to video your flight. Hope so cause so for I have not seen this plane in flight. I am just now able to start putting mine together. 62 cc engine. LOL Don

Well, today the winds finally came down the runway and not cross wind. Time to fly the SU-26 with the rcgf 62. The plane flew great this time. Take off was in about 75 to 100 feet at half throttle. I did basic aerobatics, loops, rolls, satll turns, knife edge. Now time to land, that is where most of the problem has been. This time the landing was no problem. Keep a little power on until across the runway and the let it touch down. Two flights today. Now time to check it over. Next time out going to try to change props to a 22X8 instead of a 22X10. This plane is just a big fun plane to fly.....................As you can tell I am happy with the results.

Great to here about your flight and no problems. I am looking forward to more reports in the future. Is the 22-10 too much prop or is it pulling the plane too fast. Or is the prop too much too soon on a new engine. What did it tack at?

I did not tack the engine, maybe next time out. I think a lower pitch would help with aerobatic and give a little bit more power. The plane is not fast. It is a slower flying plane, more like the real/full size plane.

My ignition burned a about 10 days ago. After talking to Henry at rcgf, I should not have used any battery over 4.8 volts. They are sneding me a new one and should be here by the end of the week. Maybe get to fly it again next week.

I have been reading this forum and it is very helpful. I have the su-26 from nitroplanes and still havn't quite finished it yet. I have been having trouble keeping the hinges glued in, finally got some gorilla glue and that seems to be holding. I have a converted chainsaw engine mounted to the front of mine, the scary part is I do not know what size the motor is, seems to run good though, but it is a heavy motor weighing in at 7 pounds. I am hoping the extra weight of this motor will take care of the tail heavy problem I have been reading about. I was told the motor was somewhere between 65 and 80cc but I am unsure. I do not see any markings on this motor so I don't know anything about it. I know I am taking a big chance.
