Here are some pics of the custom exhaust that I built for my 336...

I hope the welds hold up.

It's constructed of 3/8inch copper piping and some elbows. I used a 3/8 inch union joint to allow for easy removal of the engine. I brazed all of the connection with silver bearing solder.

Hey Guys,

Not sure if anyone is still adding to this post since the last post was a while back, but I am working on one of these and wanted to get some input from you all. This plane was built from the Royal plans I believe as it is quite old. A friend of mine gave it to me and it has been sitting in a basement for some time now.

Okay, now for the questions:

1. The motor mounts on this plane are wood and built into the plane - should I cut them off flush with the firewall and mount a more current motor mount in there or will it be okay to mount the motor on the wooden mount?

2. This plane has been set up with the bell cranks and I think I am going to leave it this way for now - how strong of servos are you all using? What kind of servos? Etc....

I appreciate any help that I can get.

Calvin

Calvin, My Skymaster was built 15 yrs ago also, so I too have the bell cranks in the wings and booms. It just hung around the shop until this year when I decided it needed some air time. Its a real mess to get 3 servos in the center section. I had to build a servo tray for the rudder/elevator servos, and an angles tray for the ailerons. I may later put the aileron servos out in the wings for a direct connect if it seems they need to be there. As for the motor mounts that came with the kit thats whats in mine. I have had to glass them in place inside the cowl. After running the engines and ground taxing I found them loose. As you already know Royal Kits are built of balsa blocks, I just hollowed them as needed and left parts of them in where i needed strength. If you want to use other mounts look at the firewalls they are only 1/8 in ply and you may need to beef those up some way. With the stock mounts they are tied to the fuse at various points with webbing plates.

I am using 3004 BB servos in the wing and on the nose gear. I have mini servos on the throttles connected via Y-harness.

As good setup I read in Model Aviation Jets column for nose gear steering is as follows: If you have a computer radio with mixing options plug the nose gear into the 7 or 8 channel that has a knob on the radio, then mix this with the rudder. What this does is let you use the knob to set the nose gear trim and not effect the rudder trim. It works great and eliminates another y-harness. By mixing with the rudder you can also use the expo and dual rate functions of that channel separately. Again not effecting the rudder settings.
Driving down the runway and taxing is still done using the rudder stick so its really no different. I havent flown mine yet just taxi tests. It weighs in at 10 lbs ready to fly. Hope its not to fat to get off the ground. I has a 29 oz/sq.ft. wing loading now. There are some pics in my gallery of it.

Pete

Hi Calvin,

I also own a Marutaka (a.k.a. Royal) Skymaster. Still working on mine. It's fully built but I still need to fiberglass the wing. Fuse is just about ready for paint.

To answer your questions, the wood mounts that are included in the kit should be just fine. You could however cut off the blocks and install a custom motor mount. Do keep in mind though (as Pete mentioned above) that the firewall is only 1/8" ply. So, if you do it, use a 1/8" ply doubler for strength. Just curious - what type of power are you thinking of using?

As for the bellcranks, they should be ok as long as there isn't lots of play in the connections. When I built mine, I scrapped the bellcranks and installed individual servos for each aileron and flap. The flaps are not standard on these kits. I built mine custom. I too am using Futaba 3004BB servos for everything except the throttles; in which case I use 2 tower mini servos.

I built my wing as one piece. Therefore, the booms are not detachable. To operate the elevator and rudder, I ran a flexible pushrod down each boom. The pushrods exit on the inside of each boom near their respective control (i.e. Rudder or elevator). The other end of the pushrod ends up in the center of the wing. Each control (rudder and elevator) is operated by an individual servo in the center section of the wing. With that said, I have a total of 6 servos in the wing.

Some of the other mods that I have made to my 336 are:
-Replace original wire nose gear with Robart Strut
-Added nav lights, landing lights, strobe, and beacon.
-purchased the cockpit kit for this kit

I would certainly like to keep this post going, so, if you have more questions, please post them or send emails (atsioukl@tampabay.rr.com) .
Additionally, please remeber to post some pics of your progress!

Anthony

For power was thinking of using saito 82 - they are lighter than the saito 72 and would produce enough power for this plane.

I will post pics within the next day or two of the planes progress.

Thanks for the input.....

The wing on this one was built were the tail boom can come off - it also uses flexable pushrods to control rear surfaces...

The bellcranks are not sloppy, so I think that will be okay for now. I do need to work on the flaps a little as they are a little harder to operate. The ailerons are very smooth, but the flaps take a little more to move. If left the way they are right now I would have to use a high torque servo.

I am concerned about getting all the servos in the center of the wing...

I have the fuse on mine painted.... I will try to post pics tonight when I get home from work.

Hi Calvin,

Just curious - why are you concerned about getting all the servos in the center of the wing?

Please post pics when you get a chance. Would love to see your 336!

CB:

That one looks about as good as a couple "Oscar Pigs" I saw trashed at DaNang.

Your work is cut out for you.

Bill.

Calvin,

What a huge difference in the 'before and after' pics. Good job. Let me ask you, what it the model finished with?
