Looks like no one has posted in some time. So, I figured I'd contribute. Here's some updated pics of my 336. Was finally able to get some additional stripes on the fuse along with the 'N' number on the booms. Getting closer each day.

Anthony, hey, that's looking great, thanks for the pics. It is a unique style of aircraft, one of my favorites. What's that I see lurking up in the corner of your first pic, could that be a 182? That's another of my favorites.

Hi DelRay,

Thanks for the comments. I can't wait to get this guy done. It's been almost 3 years that I have been working on this kit. I'm really looking forward to flying it though. Maybe in a couple more month. I have a few more stripes to apply - 2 on the booms, and 3 or 4 on the wheel pants. After that, it's a matter of applying the clear coat and putting her all together.

Question for you - how do you think the tail numbers look? Do you think I should resize them and make them a bit bigger?

Anthony

Anthony, well, I did some looking around, and it seems as though your numbers are fairly close to scale, although I did notice that the majority of the planes I did look at, the numbers were in most part, a little taller than yours. But, I did find one that had the numbers were on the vertical fin. Myself, I'd say yours look great the way you have them. The stripes on the tail booms will take up some of that open space and make the numbers seem larger, just my opinion there. I think adding the stripes on the tail booms will really set it off nicely. Jim

Ok, thanks Jim. I'll leave them and add the stripes on the boom (maybe tonight) and then repost some pics.

Thanks again!

Hey folks,

Looks as if this thread has been stagnant for a while. I just picked up one of these yesterday and I am in the process of refurbishing it. Here are a few questions:

-Can you still get the cockpit interior?
-Recommendations on rear engines?

Thanks,
Brent

Hi Brent,

Welcome to the thread. Best chance for getting a cockpit kit for this airplane would be to try Ebay. These airplanes and associated accessories are not made any longer.

As for rear engines, I would prefer to match it to the front. For 2 strokes, I'd say a 40 size would be ok. Better yet would be a .46 such as an OS 46 AX. I personally prefer a 4 stroke for this kit. I've purchased 2 FS 70's for mine which should be more than enough.

Good luck with your project. Post some pics if you can!

atsioukl,

Thanks for the reply. .46's eh? I love the OS AX and have a couple of them hanging around that seem to migrate to the plane that I am wanting to fly next. I P B-25. Trying to keep the cost down on this one, but the way I am, it never works that way. I think I will be doing the FAC version on this one. I did check Ebay and other online searchse to no avail for the cockpit. I was wondering of the KMP was a similar size and I could replace the cowls with theirs. Just a thought. In review of the extensive contours of this plane, I don't think that monocote is the way to go. The way I received it was covered in monocote and it just was not up to my par. I have not tried glassing yet, but may consider it. Have you done this before?

Again, thanks for any input.

Brent

Brent,

Keep checking Ebay. I would almost guarantee that one shows up. May take a few weeks/months but they are out there. I've seen them before.

As for cowls, if you feel like making the mods required, you oculd probably go with teh KMP's. Another option is the Top Flite 182 Skylane cowl for the front (not sure what you'd do for the back). These are available in glass via Stan's or Fiberglass Specialties. I'm actually using the 182 wheel pants from Fiberglass Specialties for my 336.

I definately agree with you about the monocote - I think it should be avoided at all costs on this airplane. Just my opinion. I would go with one of two options -

1) Fabric covering followed by primer and paint, or

2) Fiberglass

I chose fiberglass for mine. It's the first time I've ever glassed an airplane and seems to be pretty simple. Just time consuming. The finish, however, is good and is easily repaired. My 336 is being finished in PPG paint and will be clearcoated with a 2 part clear. I've used this on other aircraft and while it is a bit pricey, it holds up extremely well over time.

If you are considering glassing, here is a good link to help you along: http://www.airfieldmodels.com/information_source/how_to_articles_for_model_builders/finishing_techniques/apply_fiberglass_finish/index.htm

This guy does a great job narrating this article. In fact, if you have questions while doing this, you can email him and he will reply. I did many times.

Anthony,

I will keep checking Ebay.

Humm, fabric and paintin eh? I have used Coverite fabric covering and recently Solortex. I have heard that solortex can be painted, but I figured it would still have a cloth finish. I prefer the solortex as it is very easy to use and works great with contours. So, you say a primer and then paint over this. In further thought I would assume that this would cover the fabric detail. Any experience with this method?

Hi Brent,

I have used fabric before on my Top Flight 182 Skylane. I beleive it was Coverite. After applying the fabric, I sprayed everything with primer. Sanded it down with wet paper a bit and reprimed. Took about 3 coats to fill the weave. You'll pretty much have to do the same thing with fiberglass since the epoxy will not completely fill the weave. Once you have a smooth finish, you apply the paint. The paint gets sanded with wet paper too. When the finish is smooth, you apply decals followed by the clearcoat over everything. Works very well in fact. Only thing I do not like about this method is that it makes it a bit more difficult to repair damage. Other than that, works extremely well.

If, however, you'd like to keep the fabric detail for an old-timer type airplane (i.e. Cub), you simply spray a light coat of paint only on it. I've done this with a cub of mine. Works well.

Not sure if anyone is still following this thread. I'd like to keep it alive if possible. Here's some new pics of my skymaster. Getting closer and closer to completion. Just need to put in the remaining windows in the fuse, touch up some of the stripes, and finally clear coat everything.

Hi guys. After a 3 month search, my Royal 337 kit arrived today. I do have a cockpit kit. One thing on my list of things to do this winter is to build a vacuuform setup and make copies of things like cockpit kits. No promises about when, but it is definitely on my list of things to do. In three months of watching ebay, I have not seen a Marutaka / Royal cockpit kit of any model offered other than with a kit.
