Rick,

I do understand your pain. I live at about 7000' altitude here in colorado and everything has struggles flying. I installed the Delta V 480 system, upgraded the ESC/BEC and run it on a 4s, 1500mah pack. THe plane has great performance. If you can put the extra money in it, seeing you have the basic investment there already, at your altitude it should do quite well. The down side is flight time is about 4 min and the addition of a little more money. The good thing is that you are dealing with a company that supports its products from the USA and not from China.

Good luck,

Ed

I don't know about you guys, but If I wanted to spend $500.00 on a jet I would have from the start and it wouldv'e been a way better aircraft than the E-flight. Even worse, $500.00 for a plane that can't fly over 4 minutes, pretty weak if you ask me.

For anybody reading this, do yourself a favor and don't even bother, there are WAY better deals out there like the RXR L-39 Albatross from great planes. $159 reciever ready and flies great right out of the box (just like E-Flite promised but did not deliver).

I'm glad your enjoying yours Imagine, and I'm also glad customer service was there for you, but it seems like your the only one. My customer service experience was a joke so it doesn't really matter where the company is located. I recieved NO support whatsoever on the product. I just really don't want anybody else to have the un-enjoyable experience I have had with this model.

The best thing that ever did to my E-Flite F-16 was getting rid of it.

Oh finally! I have the Delta-V  480/60 ESC combo in mine and it finally flies as it should on a 4s 2200, but it's still no screamer. It needs a fair amount of flaps mixed in to fly slow enough to land on the belly with out damage.
After the fiasco with the stock motor, there's not much left of it to repair, so I ordered a Lanxiang F-22 to replace it.

**UPDATE** It looks like there are now 2 versions of the Delta-V 480, the 4000kv 3s/4s version (upgrade for the F-15) and the 4800kv 3s version for the F-16.

Video of the F-16 with the new 4800 kV motor is now online:

My apologies for taking so long - I thought we would have had it in place a couple of weeks ago.

"Video of the F-16 with the new 4800 kV motor is now online"

We have seen these so called videos showing how well the F-16 flew before, We all know this plane does not work anywhere near the way they were portrayed in those films. I noticed you did not list any spec's on this upgrade other than the motor, So did they use 4s or 5s lipo's, Which ESC and how many motors did they go through this time to make this new video? and how much more money do you want from us to try to make this plane fly decent. Is E-Flight or Horizon providing any money back guarantee with the upgrade that it will work as portrayed in the video?

Rick

Rick,
I too had difficulty with this jet. I live at approx. 7000ft altitude so use your imagination as to how difficult it was for me. I put in the Delta V-480. I also found a small sized 4s pack and it fly's great. Yes it will end up a bit pricy but with these changes it will fly well. The down side is with the small pack I am using I get about 4 mins with enough to land. I would like more but I would rather have a bit better performance and reliability rather than weght and weakness from fuse modification.

imagine95

So it is alright with you that people who have purchased the jet now have to buy a new motor and new LiPo Batteries to possibly make it fly decent? I don't understand this. They posted a video that showed how great this jet flew with the stock motor and a 3s 2100mah LiPo, which is one of the main reasons I purchased it to then find out that the stock jet could not fly the way it did in the video and the motors failed quickly. Horizon and E-Flight have failed there customers on this one.

At this point Horizon should provide the option of either a complete refund including return shipping or this new motor to anyone who has purchased this jet from them. It is the honorable thing to do to keep there customers.

Rick

Rick,
You are as upset as I was. I agree that the jet should perform better than it does "out-of-the-box". The dollars needed in order to get this one flying is a bit up there. I cannot speak for Horizon but if you have your receipt and the airplane (crashed or not) get in contact with them and stay on it until you get some answers, it could tke a while.
Good luck, stay in touch.
Ed

bearcatf8 -> RE: ***** New E Flite F16 400 DF (Thunderbird Scheme) ***** (7/3/2009 1:25 PM)

Well Rick ,I still have mine (the replacement) setting on a shelf. It'll set there till I get a motor sent to me or when cows start putting methane gas in my car. or when the grandson gets a little older ,It'll hang in his room. I don't see it flying ever!

wbojko -> RE: ***** New E Flite F16 400 DF (Thunderbird Scheme) ***** (7/3/2009 7:39 PM)

I really thought that Horizon would make good on this. Mr. Eichstedt do the right thing and make this right. The last four airplanes and five heli's ,I purchased came from Horizon. That's not counting the two transmitters and seven recievers that came from the same building. I expect you to at least PM the people on this thead and make this right. I know Tower would.

antcomm -> RE: ***** New E Flite F16 400 DF (Thunderbird Scheme) ***** (7/4/2009 2:56 AM)

Amen to that Rick, horizon should make good to they're loyal customers when a product fails. After all, this stuff is supposed to be fun!!

tankertoad -> RE: ***** New E Flite F16 400 DF (Thunderbird Scheme) ***** (7/6/2009 7:56 PM)

Send the old ones back.

I had the original motor/fan combo in mine and the bearings were going after a handfull of flights. I pulled it and sent it to Horizon for replacement fully expecting to get the same stock motor, but I got the new Delta V 480 (4000kv) as a replacement instead. It only cost me the shipping to get the new motor/fan.

antcomm -> RE: ***** New E Flite F16 400 DF (Thunderbird Scheme) ***** (7/6/2009 10:19 PM)

Really!? Did you have to call Horizon first?

tankertoad -> RE: ***** New E Flite F16 400 DF (Thunderbird Scheme) ***** (7/7/2009 9:19 PM)

Nope. Just fill out a repair request form and send it back. You will pay shipping both ways. I've always had great support from Horizon when using their repair request system.

http://www.horizonhobby.com/Support/Product/Default.aspx

I expected to get the original motor/fan but they sent the Delta-V 480 4000kv/3s-4s. Although they just came out with the 4800kv/3s version, suited for the F-16 on a 3s lipo, I'm glad I got the 4000kv because I had already ordered another Delta-V 480 and some 4s lipos to run in it. With two Delta-V 480s in hand, I decided to put one in the F-16, and the other in an Exceed RC F-35(a must have if you want a good 65mm single-fan jet).
The F-16 flies heavy on a 4s/60A ESC set-up, but it does have lots of punch. You're probably better off with the 4800kv on a 3s, but there's no way to know for sure until someone gets the two side-by-side and does a good test.
(Hmmmm, perhaps something that should have happened before a release to the public?[:@]Sorry, I'm a tester by trade and had to get a jab in[;)])

antcomm -> RE: ***** New E Flite F16 400 DF (Thunderbird Scheme) ***** (7/7/2009 11:53 PM)

Thanks for your help, I will do just that. I also have the F-35, it flys great if anything it's a little too floaty. Does the extra weight help smooth that airframe out?

tankertoad -> RE: ***** New E Flite F16 400 DF (Thunderbird Scheme) ***** (7/8/2009 1:10 AM)

It certainly does. I'm running a Flightmax (Zippy) 4s 2200 and it fits well with a little foam removed at the rear. It's much faster, more stable and the performance is great!

antcomm -> RE: ***** New E Flite F16 400 DF (Thunderbird Scheme) ***** (7/8/2009 1:44 AM)

Are you running two servos or four in your F-35? I also have a GP L-39 that's modded and pretty quick (approx 80mph) Great plane but they should have designed it with landing gear. Ive never crashed it landing, but I just crashed 20 mins ago trying to hand launch. Ugh, where's the CA!!

Take offs, landings, and touch and go's are too much fun anyways!!

tankertoad -> RE: ***** New E Flite F16 400 DF (Thunderbird Scheme) ***** (7/8/2009 2:23 AM)

I'm running 4 servos and no landing gear (grass field). It beats up the stabs on landing, so I fiberglass'd them, added wood backers to the control horns, and added a 3rd pin hinge to each side. I also added two finger slots (like the one at the back of the fan access hatch) to each side to give me something to grab on to since the bottom is so wide.
Just for fun, I also have an LX F-22 that I modded with scale thrust vectoring. I'll start a thread on it once I get it in the air and get everything dialed in.

Rick_H -> RE: ***** New E Flite F16 400 DF (Thunderbird Scheme) ***** (7/13/2009 1:13 AM)

David Eichstedt

So what is the policy, Can we send in the Junk EDF for replacement with the new Delta-V 480 65mm EDF System, 4800Kv systems? and Will they make this plane fly with 3s batteries without burning up or do we have to use the 4s batteries?

jdeters79 -> RE: ***** New E Flite F16 400 DF (Thunderbird Scheme) ***** (7/14/2009 3:30 AM)

So I've logged about 7 flights on my E-Flite F-16. Flying it today shortly after launching I heard a pop, followed immediately by complete loss of power to the DF. Immediately after loss of power to the DF, I was able to control the control surfaces and began to set up for a dead stick landing. I made it to about 3 feet off the ground and then I lost all power to the control surfaces. The airplane pitched up, stalled, and spun into the ground busting off the nose. Walking up to the wreckage I noticed some smoke rising from the speed control. I immediately disconnected the battery, burning my thumb in the process. Looking at the ESC after "cooling down", I noticed substantial damage to the case. My guess is something in the ESC blew (MOSFET?) causing a short which eventually took out the flight controls.

Here are a few pictures.
