I'm getting just about done with my Mojo build and have a few questions about it. There is a part in the enclosed pic that is block shaped and has a couple of holes in it. I can't seem to figure out where it goes. ?? I don't see it in the other pics of the assembly.
Also, would you guys recommend covering the pieces before glueing the assemblies together? Like covering the wing before glueing it in?

I believe that is the LG reenforcement block. It goes through the slot on the bottom of the motor mount.

You should cover everthing before you glue it together. There's a few great threads on building these planes at the website mentioned in my signature. Mr Swany also posted an alternative assembly method a while back and it looks much easier.

E-mail me if you have any questions.

Chris

Ah.... yes, I see that now. I wasn't sure if I was going to install the supplied landing gear legs anyway. I wasn't too sure how they would hold up. ? Thanks for the info.

Use the included wire gear, its the best system out there for slabs. It will out last your airframe.

Then, go to Swany's support forum. More info than you can possibly imagine. Slight exaggeration.

Yes, that is the landing gear support block. Glue it in with the cut out facing down (ground when plane is on its gear). The wire legs will shrug off all dorks and at most, may have to be bent back to shape every once in a while. I have had Tetherites on Mojos and while they look cool and work great, they will also break the fuse if you hit hard enough where as the wire will take all the punishment!

Use the wire gear.

By the way, it's a good idea to use the wire gear.

Finally, make sure you use the wire gear.

Oh, did I mention to use the wire gear???

What gear do you recommend?

Actually, the wire gear is good but I use my own carbon/glass gear now on most of my profiles. It saved my bacon earlier this week when I had an engine cut while climbing out of an ankle-level hover. I managed to get the model level before it hit but it kind of pancaked into the tarmac.

The tailskid was pushed up into the back of the fuselage and the wooden prop broke but the undercarriage soaked up all the rest of the impact. With wire gear like the Mojo's (and despite the Mojo's legendary toughness) I don't think I'd have gotten away with it.

Good gear (with just the right amount of flex) also makes it much safer to do hover-landings where you just cut the throttle when the tail-touches and the model flops forwards on to the mains.

Bruce, I used to think you knew all the answers, but that was when your opinion agreed with mine. How can I go on now?

Just kidding, of course. So would you care to share a bit more info about this gear? Is it difficult to make?

Yeah, it's *very* easy to make and tough as old boots.

The mold (form) can be made from some aluminum or stainless sheetmetal bent over some pipe. It's important to keep the radius of the bends in the undercarriage legs as large as practical because spreads the stresses when the gear is loaded up.

The metal form is waxed and a single layer of carbon twill is laid first. Then you use 3-5 runs of unidirectional glass roving (which is just long bunches of glass strands loosely stitched together into a ribbon. Of course all of this is well wetted out with a good expoxy resin (West, or equiv).

Then a layer of carbon twill is placed on the top and (optionally) some mylar (or other plastic sheet) is placed on top.

If you've got a vacuum-bagging system then bag them (they'll turn out lighter) but if not then that's not a problem.

I'll do a "DIY" article for RCModelReviews and post the steps with plenty of pictures if folks are interested.

Unlike all-carbon legs, these are more flexible for a given strength so they don't just snap and they provide plenty of cushioning when you do dump a plane hard.

That doesn't sound to difficult. I'd love to see a how-to on RCMR. I've got some Tetherite gear on a Sabre 56 that are holding up well, but a spare pair would be nice to have. I've also got a Fusion 67 in the pipeline that could use a good pair of gear.

Thanks for all the info you guys. I haven't been on the thread for a while and need to get back to building the Mojo too. Been way too busy with other stuff. Maybe I'll get a chance to work on it this week end. I can't wait to get it into the air.
